End of 4OD in Ireland?

I got an email saying the 4OD application is going to be stopped and all channel 4 shows will now only be available from the website. Didn't have a problem with that until I went to the website and saw they don't allow people in Ireland to watch any of their shows on the website any more.

This is sickening, 4OD was a great service. I couldn't get channel 4 on my tele (which just blew up leaving me teleless) so I relied on the application for allot of my tv.

Since when are C4 UK only?

It may only be a temporary problem. You should send them an email and they might be able to fix it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

I did, but according to the FAQ on the website it's only available in the UK now and the auto email I got back says they may not reply if the question is answered in their FAQ.

Its a disgrace if they stop doing it, It's a great service

The BBC iPlayer doesn't work in Ireland either so I guess they're going down that road. It's a shame really - I'd only just reinstalled the software

Can't you use a proxy server thingie to bounce your request through the UK?

Haven't done it myself but it is possible.

As far as I know they were planning to seperate out the streams for Ireland and the UK so they could show different ads in Ireland than the UK but this was put on hold. Didnt think they would cut us off altogether though which is very disapointing.

It's understandable with the BBC though, it's a service for UK TV licence payers. Channel 4 is a free to air TV channel. The thing is I'd gladly pay for a BBC tv licence so I could watch stuff on their website.

I've done some limited looking into proxys but it seems you have to pay for a good one.

    From the website:
I live in the Republic of Ireland and I used to be able to watch programmes via the Catch-up service on Channel4.com. Why I am no longer able to do this?

There are some programmes for which we do not have rights in the Republic of Ireland. We are not, at the present time, able to just block specific programmes on the new 4oD Catch-Up service and therefore we have unfortunately had to block the entire service in this region. We are in continual discussions with our content providers, and we are looking to find a solution to make Channel 4 content available on demand in the ROI.

Thank you for your email regarding 4oD Catch-Up.

Unfortunately, 4oD Catch-Up is no longer available in the Republic of

This sucks. I had just started to watch Shameless and I don't want to really fork out money for the box sets.

I really hope this gets resolved quickly.

So they've gone from showing everything in Ireland to showing nothing. What kind of messed up 'licensing issues' is that?! Guess we'll have to seek less legitimate means to watch ch4's greatest shows.....:(

I'm going to wildly accuse RTE of shenanigans assuming since they moved online they made all kinds of threats of physical violence against C4 as the internet was now their turf.

Sorta on the same lines as this.

Has anyone noticed on Sky, channel 4 sometimes comes up with the message, This programme is not available.

Would this be happening for the same reason?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Yes but there is an easy way around it. Tune in the FTA version and watch it in Other Channels. See the Satellite board for more information.

    Correct!

The player is on a par with the rest of them. It's just the content is useless as it's RTE.

strange that they have no problem with the licencing and broadcasting free to air over satellite to ireland but over the web theres a problem:confused:

The FTA broadcast is not officially available here though. The Sky version has programmes blocked.

Had a look at the FAQ

I have more faith in C4 than the BBC who state much the same, but I still wouldn't count on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,778 ✭✭✭dmcg90

I find it hilarious that C4 can put irish ads targeted towards irish comsumers when watching Big Brother clips online, but not for 4od? I got an Irish vodafone ad watching BB clips, there clearly is support for showing programmes to Irish viewers, why cant they just do it then?

Absolute disgrace, I'm betting we never get access in Ireland due to their battle with the BBC for some of the TV licence fee.

If channel 4 had any sense they'd offer their own paid subscription service for non-uk viewers... €50/year or something like that

They don't own international rights to any imported shows so that isn't an option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 110 ✭✭pphheerroonn

Silly move by Channel 4 really. I was an avid user of 4OD until I logged on recently to the website where it told me (after serving me up an ad) that it wasn't available in Ireland. I emailed them and got the same copy-paste email as mentioned before. I don't understand why though because from what I can tell the list of programs broadcast on TV in the UK and Ireland are identical so shouldn't they just be blocked as well?

Getting to my point, I rarley watch TV nowadays, I sometimes Sky+ a show or mostly I would watch it using the web player for that channel. But now that option is gone! What Channel 4 and others need to realise, similar to the music industry, is that if someone wants to watch a show enough, they will. Be it Channel 4s method or other (yarr) means which don't result in any revenue for the broadcaster. I just think it makes more sense for the programs to be monatized rather than let them just pass by in the less restrictive filesharing world.
