Cancelling a contract?

Hi all, I am currently on an O2 contract which is due to expire early 2010. I wish to upgrade my phone but the phone I want is cheaper on another network. Is there a fee/fine involved in cancelling a contract and changing to a new phone on a new network? Thanks in advance
