Sick really of handing over obscene amounts of money to the insurance industry!

Ive heard of IAM and RoSPA but not really sure how to go about getting training or sitting the exam etc. They are obviously relevant from the safety aspect of your own driving but what do they cover in advanced driving techniques?

Any know who runs this type of training?

The IAM and RoSPA run them!
    www.iam.org.uk/Irish+Advanced+Motorists/
I know RoSPA do bike stuff in Ireland, not too sure about cars - check their site - www.rospa.com/

I'm curious to know how passing the Advanced test lowers your insurance?
I've never noticed it as a question on insurance applications - are there specialist brokers that you go through once you've passed?

Some companys offer a reduction (~10%) if you hold an advanced driving qualification. However, most companys dont!

afaik, the course is all about awareness on the road and driving at a speed to suit the conditions. There is no advanced car control training in this course I think

    Yes,

It's pretty much a situational awareness.

You won't learn how to drive like a rally driver i.e. how to drive in snow, rain, heel-toe-shifting, left foot braking and other advanced techniques.

I have it through the job, Hiberinian and AXA-PMPA give discounts for it. Roughly 10-15% I think.

BMW do MINI Driver training in Munich if you can make it over. It's superb, they include the use of a MINI Cooper S for the training which includes :

Explanation about how to judge/enter/exit a corner
The forces at work when cornering
The forces at work when braking
    Emergency braking techniques
    Hazard Anticipation when driving
    Slalom driving
    Basic track tutorials
Stunt tutorials - J turns, Handbrake turns
Skidpan tutorials - what to do when aquaplaning
    Advaned track tutorials.

All of this was done recently at Silverstone for the MINI United Festival, most of it was free, the only exception being the Stunt Tutorials costing 35 Sterling because of the amount of tires they were eating through. The school in Munich is the same school they use when someone buys an M3/M5 in America to offer lessons to the yanks on how to drive properly. Each M car has a 3 day session included in the price.
