The quickest route is through the ar$e end of Roscommon.
The easiest route is go to Athlone and swing left off the motorway. I reckon the difference is about 45 mins.

I suggest the the Athlone route.

I travel that road quite a bit, and have tried all routes. The best way I find is via Athlone. It's well signed on the Athlone By-pass for Cavan, taking the N55 through Ballymahon, Edgeworthstown, Granard. Fairly straight-forward. Should take you about 2hrs 45 at the most

Take the N6 to Athlone and the N55 Northeast straight to Cavan from Athlone. The N55 is not a great road, but the N63 is atrocious and very twisty.

go to the bus station. get on/in big long thing that has cavan written on the front, pay the driver and you will arrive in Cavan half a century later
