Broadband to be split in a building?

    Hey,

My dad has a building which is split into apartments, he wants to provide broadband to each unit but wants to keep costs low. I figure he could use a wireless router but if a few people were online at one time it would be really slow.

Cabling the building is out as the cost would be huge and the rents are falling. Anyone any suggestions?

Really good wireless router and QoS. The likes of this would suffice.

Let each tenant get their own broadband?

If it's apartments, then they'll each need to get UPC/Sky to set up TV, or eircom to install a line, so why try to give them broadband when it'll be practically useless. It's an expense for him, and anyone who wants a decent broadband will probably just get their own anyway.

It means that each user gets an equal share of the BB pie. However it will be fraught with problems unless you use a router that can limit individual user usage as there is no such thing as unlimited BB.

I think you are just asking for trouble with this idea.

You don't say how many apartments are involved but to distribute wireless well over more than a couple is more than likely going to take more than a simple wireless router. You have only got to have a look around here to see the problems people have in getting a good wireless signal over a large house.

If you are honest with people and tell them what you are offering anyone in the know will not find it attractive.

It will only take one heavy downloader to mess up things for everybody.

Who is going to solve the inevitable technical problems that will arise? If you are providing bb as part of your deal then the tenants will expect you to solve their internet problems for them.

It is very difficult to predict the performance of any wireless equipment in advance and to get the best out of N equipment you need the pc/laptop to have an 'n' wireless card.

Not really though, he'll be opening himself up to a world of trouble. Providing support, being legally responsible for everything the tenants do online, paying any charges for excessive usage, trying to split it so everyone gets an equal share, stopping those who are excessive, etc.

Also, if the tenants don't get the free broadband they were promised, they'll hold it against him, and it'll only drive them away. This could very well turn into a reason to leave, or a reason to look for a rent reduction. He should stay clear of it.
