Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The light was quite dull during a visit to the Talbot Botanic Gardens at Malahide Castle. Some further work in Neat Image could dispel noise, but so far the hoverfly glows more in the cropped image.

Bump! Thought I'd bring this thread up as it's a brilliant resource for finding out what has been done to achieve the final image.

    Convincing?

Editing involved first using the clone tool to remove the arm of the rig. This was really difficult to get right (and real looking). Done that a few weeks ago, but this evening i had a go at dropping in a new background.
I used this one --> click as it was the first large sized image i found that had roughly the right orientation. When i was happy i had right bit of the building selected i then used the radial blur to give the motion effect

That looks really well, completely convincing. Very interesting to see how you do it too. In one of your earlier posts you mentioned taking three different shots, with different exposures. Do you take these at the same time, or do you take the shot, change the settings, take the next, etc, etc? What if it's a moving target?

Thanks. This shot was a single exposure - although for every good one i got that evening there was 20 ready for the recycle bin!
Each shot was a 2 to 6 second exposure to give the blur - depending on how the light was fading

Can I ask how long it took you to take the original shots, and if cloud movement was something to look out for? The finished product looks stunning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 812 ✭✭✭gary82

Took about 20minutes as it was taken from a cathedral spire - which didn't have one clear view - had to take shots of out little turret windows to get the 270deg sweep (much of which I ended up cropping out). Didn't have to touch up the clouds so nope movement didn't seem to be a problem. Clouds are easy to clone if needs be though.

I used a whole new colour correction method on this one. The first one is converted straight from the raw file. I just resized it. The second one was imported into lightroom to catalog it. Then opened up in Photoshop without making any adjustments in lightroom.

These are the 3 main steps I did to complete it.

#1 Added a curve and darkened the green and red channels a fraction. Then ran the command to Adjust Shadows/Highlights. Flattened the image.

#2. Duplicated the BG, switched to the blue channel and replaced it with the red channel using the Apply Image command. To add more contrast to the image, I switched to the red channel and added a curves adjustment to it. Then switched to the green and added a curves adjustment to that too. Set the duplicate layers mode to luminosity.

#3. Then set the image to LAB mode. Choose Not flatten from the dialog box. Then flattened the image. Duplicated the BG and set the duplicated layer to multiply. Added a layer mask to the top layer then clicked the apply image command and clicked OK. Using a curves adjustment I lightened the layer mask a little. Lastly and most bizarrely, I added a Gausian Blur to the layer mask to sharpen the image. Converted it back to RGB added a sig, all done.

I think I achieved a more vibrant colour realistic image. ;)

After some inspiring posts by Longshanks I decided to give the PP a go myself.
My first go, I started out with this.......

And did a bit in photoshop and ended up with this,
    3761039657_f0e4aab484_b.jpg

I made a mistake with it which I'm going to try to fix later...

    Baza210 wrote: »

    Sort of,

    I made a B&W layer
Picked the yellow caliper and porsche symbol out of the original layer
Merged these onto the B&W layer
Render/lighting effects/spotlight, set it up the way I liked
Selected wheel and deselected caliper (this time ;) )
Applied a radial blur of 2
Inverted selection (excluding the caliper) and applied a motion blur of 5 px
    Unsharpen Mask of 150% 1.2px
Canvas size of of 115% with black background.
Its really not that difficult, I would be a novice at best, I just played around with different tools to see what they did.

Here's the one with the right bits moving ;)

    After:
    3725881561_f76b031836.jpg

I took one RAW photo* and created 3 pictures with different exposures in my RAW editor (-2, 0, +2) and then merged them together in Photomatrix (HDR creator) and fiddled with the settings.

*It took 15 million attempts to even get the one I ended up using. Either the sky was a white mess, or everything else was black. Blah.

    Highkey test.....

I used the dodge tool set on the highlights @ 10% to make the whites brilliant white. Added a little curve using Guy Gowan method. Then USM a little.

I bought a 4x4' sheet of perspex from B&Q and painted the underside of it white. You can just about see the back edge of it. The seamless white background is a 13x7' roll of lino painted matte white on the underside of it.

Here's the setup. The image above was taken with one light on the bg and another on the subject. I plan to have two bg lights in the future. Should have them by the end of next week. Flashes are triggered using a couple of Elinchrom Skyports.

So if you saw a model in a bikini, with a large softbox pointed at her, a camera and someone else holding a reflector you would continue with your head in the air and not even peek a glance to see what was going on???

You're a better man than me!
