    Apologies for largish images

Took a few pics on Saturday in the Botanic Gardens (from my Nokia x6, had no camera with me).

    Original
    154901.jpg

Hue saturation, Lense blur, added vignette, small bit of dodging and burning, overlayed a grungy texture and added a little noise to achieve a sort of oldish 70's photo look

Then took this a little further by adding a b&w layer, increased the lense blur adding a bit more spec highlights, dodge on hair to brighten it a little, and a hue/saturation adjustment. Make it look sort of like an old video camera frame grab or something.
    154911.jpg

I love old look effects :)

So this is the first thing I did when I got PS. I always loved this picture, but there was quite a bit of unsightly clutter.

    breakdownbefore.jpg

    breakdownpic.jpg

All I have done here is a simple crop, some selecting and clone stamping.
There are plenty of areas where you can see what I have done.

As I become more proficient with PS I will keep coming back to this picture. I have not touched colours, brightness, contrast or used any layers, so really a very basic enhancement.

Very simple change with curves and some preset in Picnik. I like vintage style
Something done as simply as this is pushing me to learn Lightroom....soon

I thought there could be a nice photo in it somewhere to took a few photos, some with slow shutter speeds. This was taken at 1/20th of a second but the initial result was a bit plain/standard.

So I did some basic editing in Picasa 3. I know I should be using Lightroom or Photoshop but haven’t found the time to study either yet. And I find that Picasa 3 does a good job. I know there some features and presets in Lightroom that I’d like. Someday, I keep telling myself, I’ll buy and learn/study Lightroom. Someday. Another confession- I don’t shot in RAW. Ever.

Anyway all I did with this photo took less than 5 minutes and I ‘framed’ the finished result as I think it’d look nice on my wall. Steps were crop, apply 1960′s effect and add the frame.

I'll take a screen grab of the sliders when I get home, there is also a graduated filter running from top to centre with saturation and exposure adjustment IIRC.

Shooting RAW helps a lot. Those clouds simply wouldn't be there in a jpeg.

Yeah :p. That's the RAW (jpeg'd) which is flatter than the camera-processed JPEG. Amazing how much colour can be retrieved when you pull down the overpowering green'ness of the water. Shot with 28mm wet lens (wide angle dome) with camera wide at 24mm to get max aperture, hence the border. Used fisheye lens correction to pull the image into the corners.

@humberklog that's a wierd one- did you mirror/copy the railings on the left and put them on the right? Cos in your original photo you don't have the railings on the right at all.

Yeah fairly easy really. The hard part was waiting to snap a person on the bridge where I needed them to be while there was no on else on it.

After that it was just a matter of taking the same images from the disc twice. Leave one pic in full and the other pic is flipped, cropped and positioned to where I wanted it.

Then it's just a matter of cropping the both pics together. Tadah.

Going back over this thread and some of the examples of what people are doing is amazing, adding tonal depth and colour that really add to the picture. I wouldn't even have the vision to see the "after" people are making when looking at the "before" shots. Great work!

    Others are basically Instagramming photos.

Why would you Photoshop a scenario where you are shooting into the "sun"?
Besides getting over that, the shadows clearly don't match the angles.

Because there was no sun and it was for a 'summer shoot'. The dreary blue one was hardly doing anything for them.

Ontop of that the shadows clearly do match the angles. They're being created by the softbox, not the sun. If you underexpose the background the flash has more say on the final image than the sun.

~I like the detail you got in the rocks with your second edit. The bottom left looks a little too bright now and is competing for the eye against the sun which used to be the main focus. A mix of the two might be nice although I prefer the person being a silhouette.
