Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Windows XP Pro install issues

Right, this is the error message I'm getting

Windows could not start because the following filw is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

The whole problem started with this error. I download a Windows update, restarted my PC and got this error.

I didn't have the time or effort to diagnose the problem so I decided to reinstall.

I have formatted and reinstalled. I'm getting the same error still.

    Any thoughts?

    MS isn't much use: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320252/en-us

I have formatted the HDD numerous times. I have reinstalled numerous times to end up with this error.

If its a slightly different error msg each time but still a file missing message you can add the posibility of an overheated CPU or bad memory to the list of posible causes.

    Test your memory with: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/download.html

A self standing\launching Linux .iso with literally dozens of utilities.

Check the HD and the Ram. The Ram check might take a few hours. Worth doing though, it is a maddening and sly problem.

I would download the 5.x beta, which is what I've been using:

Have you thought about doing an HD erase using Dban as opposed to just a format.

A cycle or two of PRNG erase might clear the problem.

I'm really starting to think my hardware is to blame.

Dban doesn't view or recongise the structure on the hard drive, it just dumps a cycle of noise\data over the HD as many times as you want, then finishes off with a zero cycle.

Typically, Dban is used where data security is required, either when selling on a HD or for redeployment.

    Here is the site: http://www.dban.org/

Please please please read up on what you're using, it is unforgiving, you will not be recovering Data if you mess up. It has a very simple interface though.
