    Hi there!

In a little bit of a rut.

Creating a new song, and my verses are taking the form of ASUS2, E, F#M,DSUS2.

I cant find suitable chords to progress to and go into the chorus...I just keep going back to the above, or playing some A variants...

    Any suggestions??

    Thx - Grace

    Hi Grace.

Your song is in the key of A so, if you wanted to play it safe you could use the options the key offers you to distill further progressions. It's not the ideal way to put it together as you may be better served by putting the guitar away and trying to hear what you need in your head first.

Here are the chords in the key of A and the various variants you can use.

    A, Amaj7, Amaj9, Aadd9 or Asus
    Bmin, Bmin7, Bmin9 or Bsus
    C#min, C#min7, C#minb9 or C#sus
    D, Dmaj7, Dmaj9, Dadd9 or Dsus
    E, E7, E9, Eadd9 or Esus
    F#min, F#min7, F#min9 or F#sus
    G#dim, G# half dim

Ideally these are to be treated as colours on a palette. They are no substitute for a good imagination.

Nothin' beats a good old-fashioned modulation to the flattened mediant for an uplifting chorus.

In English: You can do well with the classic C-Am-F-G (or those chords in a different order) for the chorus, but make the bridge Asus2-F#M-Dm-G7-C(beginning of chorus).

If you wanted to stay in A you could use A major, B Major, C#M, F#M, D major, A major, D major, D minor (four beats/strums to every chord) for the bridge and then the classic A-F#M-D-E (same as C-Am-F-G) for the chorus.

    This is kinda fun!

Another good trick is harmonic acceleration towards a cadence. In English: have a faster rate of chord changes in the chorus than verse.

you go into Aminor after one of the edominants7ths and use the 'A' bass note as a pedal for an ascending aminor mofit..
the dimor after the dmajsus is nice and bridges you into chrous for eg.

    asus emaj f#m dsus x 4
asus emal f#m dsus 9 (bridge) dmin amaj e7 to 1) or 2)
    chorus
    1)c#min // dmaj // c#min // bmin // a#7dim // bmin // e7

or very nice metheny eque changes
    2) amin7 // Asus2sus4#5 (abass fnat bnat dnat) // G#+6addb2 // f#m7b5 // fmaj // gmaj // amj // famj // g11sus2 // cmaj
