external hard drive problem s

i have an external hard drive , but the file system is missing so it will not open because it is missing its file system it will not let me format it . any ideas

You could try to format it through Disk management under Admin tools?
Might have to force it (tells you drive is in use but allows you to overwrite this) but it should work.
