Trying to set up eircom broadband with a belkin router

There has been some building work done in the place where I work and since then the Eircom wireless signal is no longer as good. So I bought a Belkin wireless G router but cannot get it to connect to the internet. Ideally what I'd like is to have eircom broadbnd using the cable in the office, and have the belkin router…

Ideally what I'd like is to have eircom broadbnd using the cable in the office, and have the belkin router provide wireless internet throughout the rest of the building. I'd also really like to not have to connect the two routers together as they are not beside eachother.

What it sounds liek you want to do is something called Wireless Bridging (WDS). Belkin have a support page on their website that you can have a look at: http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D7230-4&aid=1478&scid=0
I have tried to doing it before a few years ago but honestly I found it rather difficult, as I was trying to bridge between two different makes & models of router...still you can give it a shot - I would advise ensuring that you have the latest firmware (software built into the router itself) installed on both your belkin (http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=F5D7230-4&aid=5027&scid=0) & the netopia (http://support.eircom.net/search/?query=netopia+firmware)

In an ideal world, what you should do is:

connect your belkin to your netopia by cat5e cable. Switch the wifi off in the netopia, and switch it on in the belkin. And finally, stop the belkin from acting as a router (which prevents devices on the belkins network from speaking to devices on the netopias network) and instead set it as an access point (far simpler configuration)

The router may not support what you're trying to do. You need a range extender, or access point, for that. I don't think a standard router will support it (unless it's been designed that way).

Just to be clear.. Is a cat5e cable the same as what i'd call an ethernet cable??

correct - an ethernet cable has cat5e with rj45 plugs at either end - sorry for not taking the more commonly used term!
