Hello, I am looking for some advise on the best/cheapest way to Travel from Amsterdam to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Is there a train route that can be taken? Has anyone done this trip before? Any advise/weblinks that can be offered would be appreciated, many thanks.

Are you looking for a direct quickest possible way? I did it before but it took me 10 days

By train? Were you spending a few days here and there?

A couple of years ago i went interrailing from Malaga via Amsterdam to Dubrovnik. Trains are the best way to travel. There is no direct train to Dubrovnik as far as i can remember. Think the train goes to split and then you can get a bus from there. Its a long bus ride mind you. Dubrovnik is a great town. Great fro cliff jumping too!

I did this route last summer except the other way. Dubrovnik to Amsterdam.
We got the ferry from Dubrovnik to Split which is a nice journey.
The worst part of the whole trip was getting the tran from Dubrovnik to Budapest. It was an absolutely mammoth journey that took about 18 hours. Even tho the trains in Croatia have discos on them I would recommend stopping in Zagreb at least. The rest of the trip has good quality trains that run much faster than in Croatia

We are doing something similar this summer. From Amsterdam to Munich by train, and from Munich there is an overnight train to Zagreb. From Zagreb to Split by train, and then a 4h bus ride to Dubrovnik. Split is also worth visiting!

We have already done the bus ride from Split to Dubrovnik a couple of years ago, its not bad, the buses are nice and comfy, and there is some great scenery along the way to keep you entertained.

Alternatively you could get a bus from Zagreb to Dubrovnik directly, it takes about 9 hours, but at least its quite cheap.

I did Amsterdam to Croatia two years ago and I'd highly recommend stopping in Bosnia & Herzegovina. I decided to stop in Sarajevo and Mostar and these were 2 of the most memorable places in Europe I have ever visited. Belgrade was pretty cool too.

Conversely I found Croatia to be a bad rendition of the Costa del Sol (with the exception of Dubrovnik), especially Pula, Split, and Zadar. Horribly built up and commercialised beyond the point of no return.

Hi, go as far as Zagreb by train then fly! Croatia airlines do real cheap flights, I flew between them for €30 including taxes and bags and all, definitely worth it in my opinion especially after using trains for a few weeks before!

Just got back from a road trip last night from Brussels to Dubrovnik and back. Then got the train to Amsterdam for two nights, so actually did the exact same trip as you except in the opposite direction. Dubrovnik is a fabulous spot, wished I could have stayed longer than just 2 nights. On the way down we stopped off in Munich and Ljubljana, on the way back at Lake Garda and Strasbourg.

However, depending on your budget and how you want to get down there, a safe bet might be to get a train to Germany and fly down with Germanwings, there are probably other low cost German operators too.

Alteratively you could get a flight to somewhere else on the Croatian coast and get a ferry to Dubrovnik.

Yes stopped off in those two cities. did you go to house in Sarejevo that they used as a tunnel to smuggle in stuff during the blockade. some people tend not to like Split but a nice place to chill at night particularly on the islands.
