Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I am looking fora very small car for my wife, who hasn't driven in a few years. I was looking for a smart car but they are very expensive. I saw a toyota aygo with extras, cd player, alloys, today '06, 33000 km, very clean, 1 year warranty, for Euro 6,000. Is this good value. I was thinking of a Micra...

The Aygo is a decent little car, i'd say €6000 is a good price for one. Take a look at the Citroen C1 and Pug 107 too - the same car but with a different badge. You may get one of those cheaper.

What are they like for going on small journeys 6 - 12 miles or so ?

drummerboy I was more wondering about drivability and comfort and safety.... My wife is small bnut hasn;t driven for a few years, what is the gearbox like, is it smooth ? It is a Toyota so everything shoud be fairly good...

Gearbox is good. Fairly smooth for a small car. Engine is punchy, with plenty of poke. ABS, front airbags and pre-tensioners in the seatbelts as standard, so they are fairly safe cars to be in.

For a car with such a small wheelbase, they handle pretty well. Its a good choice for someone starting off, or starting again to drive in.

If she's really nervous an automatic might be a good idea. The Micra (old one) has a good CVT autobox, and the Yaris isn't bad either from what I've heard.

I think you could do a bit better on that price for a 06 Aygo. Here is a 07 which I'm sure could be bought with no trade in for not too far off your budget:

I'd also recommend you look at the Fiat Panda, excellent little car and €6k will get you a decent one like this too:

That looks interesting (price), long way away. I had a chat with OH this evening and she is now interested in a micra automatic.

the new Micras aren't a patch on the older ones, they're a lot more to tax, and they look awful. why put yourself through that?
