First Class Honors in engineering.

So whats the craic with firsts and seconds and 2:1s and all that?? Like whats the best and worst? Does it go 1:1, 2:1, 2:2, PASS, FAIL??
I have no idea how the grading system works... In my results all i've ever had was PASS or FAIL or PASS BY COMP... Does that mean my grades are low or wha?

    Couldn they jus use A, B, C, D...??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    70+ = first class honours = 1:1
    60-69 - high 2nd class honours = 2:1
    50-59 = low 2nd class honours = 2:2
    40-49 = third class honours = Pass

    below is a fail.

Note: your results in the post will say only either PASS or FAIL, regardless of your grade of honours. you could get 100% in everything and it would still say PASS, so don't worry about that.

(shift key broken on this keyboard, apologies)

Hey could any1 tell me can you pass by compensation even if you get less than 25%??
I got 10 and 15% in two modules but as I got high marks in my other subject I passed by compensation. However I was always told you had to have >25% todo this no??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

In all three of my subjects you need at least 25 to pass by compensation. Regardless of how high your marks are in your other modules. It should say beside your results whether you got a pass/pass by comp/fail afaik... did for mine anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

nope, you need 25 or more in any module to pass by compensation. also, you can only pass by compensation if all your modules are better than 25%.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 Mygsy

Yeah it said i had passed by compensation but i dont understand why. Dunno if I should query it or not, might make things worse 4 myself!!

Wrong. The Head of a Department can intervene.

And why would (s)he do that.... I cant think of any reason Id be a special case...

I suppose maybe if you got relatively high marks in all your other modules they might make an exception...that's just me speculating though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 42 Mygsy

ah not so much no 40-50 kinda. I got the highest marks of the year in my other subject though so thats what significantly brought up my marks...dunno if that would count??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

Contact the department. If they have made a mistake and you have to repeat they're gonna spot it sooner or later so you may as well know for yourself and prepare yourself.

    Not a problem. :)

it depends on what year you are in at each exam board meeting cases can be passed especially in first year if you have ended up passing the subject by compensation you might have to repeat it if you want to continue with it so i would check with the department in case you have to take the repeats no point waiting until sept when the repeats are over and you have to wait for a year.............

Hi Michellenman, you only have to repeat the subject if you want to keep it on if you pass the subject by compensation, you do not have to repeat the module if you pass that by compensation if you have "pass" listed on your results beside the for the subject - hope this makes sense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,195 ✭✭✭✭Michellenman

I get what you mean in your first sentence, I do want to keep French next year so I'll have to repeat those modules... You've kinda lost me after that...:o

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 958 ✭✭✭porn_star

Can anyone tell me how the results are calculated? As in, say they give you your mark out of 100 for six modules of a subject, but then they give you a grade out of 1000!? how do they get that? was trying to get onto the link on the website for calculations, but it's local access only and I'm not in Maynooth!

sorry michellenman i was watching tv and replying at the same time!!!!

if your results look like this

FR100 pass XX/1000 you do not have to repeat to keep it on but if your results look like fr100 PCOMP xx/1000 then you have to repeat the modules you have passed by compensation. you should contact the department tomorrow as it is consultation day or call to the academic advisory office and either of them will confirm if you can keep it on without having to repeat or have to repeat. good luck hopefully you dont have to repeat
