Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

00 VW Polo - driver's door lock is fecked - how much is the damage?

So I was locking my car today (via the driver's door) and it's possible I turned the key slightly too hard anti-clockwise... I didn't exert a huge amount of force on it but something obviously buckled as now when I lock the door, the key is turning a full 360 degrees.

Which is you know odd, as you turn it anti-clockwise to 9 o' clock to lock, and clockwise to 2 or 3 to lock it. The passengers side door still works as normal though.

Any idea how much this would cost to fix before I bring it in? Shouldn't be expensive but unfortunately when motors are involved, I always hugely under-estimate costs.

You can get a repair kit for the door barrell cheap enough. Fiddley job to build them though:)

I'd say the small paddle has broken. If it is then the part won't be too expensive and should be less than an hour's labour.

    Item 21 below - it's a common failure in Polos & Golfs.

Simple answer is to pay a quick visit to your local scrap yard.....

    Cheers all..

I couldn't do it myself... absolutely clueless about cars. I barely know how to drive one.. never mind fix one! :D

I just wanted an idea of a cost but I was just hoping it wasn't one of these "small jobs" that turns into "well.. the problem with this here car sir is that the door was kerbudgeoned.. so we'd to take off the door.. and the roof. And you only have one pedal now.. you only need the brake, right?!" (yes, I am aware not all mechanics are American rednecks from small towns).

It's one of those things I could live without.. it's not like I can't open the doors.. but I'd like to get it fixed at the same time.

Guess I'll leave it in before the week is out.

Just make sure the garage you call to is not made up of a front replicating the glazing section of the Stena line and the guys working behind the towering glazing metropolis are not adorned with the latest Ben Sherman outfits....

Your local dude id more honest to god .... as crap as the rest but will not hide behind the latest suit!
