Remind me again why self-determination of arbitrary groups of people is better than large groups of people forming constructive political unions?

Aggressive colonialism and the scars that exist all over the world as a result of it.

you could argue the opposite. the EU has created the longest period of peace in europe since roman times.

OK, I should have said general peace. the Balkans conflicts were relatively minor compared to WWII or the Napoleonic wars.

A free market economy is not the same thing as a country like the colonists France, UK, USA... Hasnt been much peace in Ireland from 1971 - 1998. Our first 27 years in the EU.

Last time I looked, Bosnia was definitely in Europe.

The EU is a political union and one that includes pretty much all of the major colonialists of the last 500 years. Colonialism is dead, it has nothing to do with Scottish Independance.

Ireland has had an internal conflict and whilst bloody and painful for those involved, rarely involved people from outside of the UK or Ireland and in the grand scheme of things (ie compared to WWI, WWII or the Franco-Prussian war) was fairly minor.
