    Hi,

I'm trying to capture mini dv audio onto my pc. I'm using windows movie maker and the files I'm trying to capture are saved as .wmv files. The files (video & audio) play perfectly on my camera (panasonic nv-gs27) and the capture goes ok with the video but when I try to play it back all I can hear is a huge hissing sound.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

I think you should maybe want to 'demux' the DV video, basically split off the audio and video signals.

There should be open source or free software to do this, let me have a root about online..

Can I ask a few questions?

Are you asking to extract audio from Windows .wmv files?

Are you transferring the audio/video ending up with a Microsoft format like .wmv?

Have you got the video as a raw MiniDV .avi anywhere on your PC?

    ---

    I have a Panasonic myself. The NV-GS 230 I think.

My routine for capturing from it would involve plugging it in as normal, then using WinDV: http://windv.mourek.cz/ (Free)

Press capture and wait for the footage to be dumped on your Hard Drive. You'll have a raw MiniDV .avi file on your PC, unmangled by Windows Movie Maker, as captured by your camera.

    ---

    Install VirtualDub: http://www.virtualdub.org/ (Free)

    Open VirtualDub.

Go up to the Menu bar. Click File > Open video file...

Window opens, browse to your .avi file on your PC. Double click, or select and press open.

Go up to the Menu Bar. Edit > Select all

Go up to the Menu Bar. File > Save WAV...

Window opens, select a location on your PC where you wish the .wav file to be dumped on your PC.

Close VirtualDub. Go and listen\edit\use\mux your new audio file.

    ---

The above is very simplistic. Someone with a larger brain will come along and give you a better answer, but my method involves no money and just a little time. :)

Feel free to ask questions if unsure about any of the above.

Hi guys thanks for coming back so quickly.

basically I'm just looking to capture files from minidv, transfer them to the hard drive and then break them down into clips and convert them to flash videos. So I would need both video and audio at the same time. I'm not looking to extract audio files just yet!

Cheers amalgam I will try out your instructions. It looks like exactly what I need!

I'll let you know how I get on.

LostinBlanch, VirtualDub is a quiet behemoth, it can do 1001 things.

    I would suggest visiting:

    http://forum.doom9.org/

    Also:

    http://www.videohelp.com/

videohelp.com are more tolerant of folk starting out, doom9 are a bit more strict, you would do well to read the FAQs before joining. They're not out to be mean, but a lot of people ask the same basic questions again and again..
