Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

my people always told me skoda was for the people who coouldnt afford a vw

VWs are for people who can't afford an Audi.

Audis are for people who can't stretch to a Lamborghini or a Bentley.

And all of them are really owned by Porsche these days.

Or those cleaver enough to know the only real difference is the price and badge.;)

    Back on topic,

OP, except for the Skoda and S40 the others seem a bit expensive imo.

I'd also consider a 406, some of the run out models are really well equipped and they are a very comfortable car to be in. Also consider the Ford Mondeo:

stick with vw/seat/skoda for diesels. they are one of the best diesel engine as you know from the milage you put on the passat. a mondeo is also a good alternitave to a passat. might not feel loke it is built aswell but the engine is good and has a timing chain not a belt like the vw so no need to change it which keeps costs down

That model S40 diesel was no great shakes, I'd leave it.
The Skoda Superb is based on a slightly stretched Passat platform, so it'll be the exact same as a Passat, same engines and running gear, same components mostly, bit more space.
You could also consider an Avensis diesel. The Mondeo TDDi engine is as rough as you can get. Pity, cause the rest of the car is decent enough.

The Mondeo Zetec uses the better 115bhp TDCi engine though.

By rough you mean sounds like your sitting behind the wheel of a tractor, then yes, its rough.:D

But she can take some abuse and milage. You get over the addtional noise eventually. Good cheap economical car.

    +1
Easy and cheap to service too, no timing belt and comfy ride.A quick root on DD - here's one, lots of history, decent milage and you'd get it close to 4k so have a holiday with the change!

It has no tow bar but you'll get one for €90 and fit it yourself if anyway handy. I fitted 2 with ease.

    Audi A6 1.9 TDI-Take a trip up north and you'll find an 00/02 for between 3k-4.5k

VRT will set you back 1500.

Bulletproof car that packs 130 BHP

The norths not always the solution with all the washed acidic fuel up there.
Deals are just as sweet here in many cases with a lot less hassle.:pac:

No offence to anyone out there but the Ford thing doesn't work for me..

    I bought the passat..
got the price down from E4950 to E4500 based on a sew scuf marks and the stereo is suspect...
106K miles with full service stamps from a VW dealer, receipts included.

On the stereo, its a Delta 6 model..
    CD's play fine..
Radio is pocking up stations but no sound..
When I turn volume up to top there is a crackle on FM and I can just hear stations on AM.

Any ideas out there?? or anyone replaced one and looking to sell the OEM ?

    Thanks..

Aerial not connected? Speakers not properly connected?

I don't think these are the problem...
It autotunes the stations and names them on the display so I presume the ariel is OK..

It plays a CD fine so the speakers are fine...

iPod with FM transmitter. Radio is too depressing these days anyway...
