There was a vigil in a doorway near HMV on grafton street this evening for him. Someone had put up pictures and lit candles and put flowers below them. There was a fair few standing and praying at it.

I'd mourn more for the little kid who was sleeping in the next door way

Found the news really really sad and was very shocked by it. Have been watching Michael Jackson videos all weekend (much to my OH's despair). He was pretty much the first artist I ever obsessed over in music, and I suppose you could say he's what got me into music in the first place (such a cliche now I know, but only cos it's true for so many people). My first album was Bad on cassette tape, and I was mad about him.

Watching the music videos (especially the music from the Quincy Jones years, which he never really bettered) reminds me so much of being young, so that's probably why it's so sad too. Definitely the end of an era and a huge loss to music. It would have been great to see how much more he had to give with the comeback.

Yes he went completely wacky in later life and was involved in some questionable practices with children, but when it comes to setting a standard for music and performance and dance, no one else came close to Michael Jackson. There's barely a popular artist today who doesn't take something from him.

Very sad he came to an end too young and without a (possibly) triumphant comeback.

This might have been posted already but the thread is too big to search!

Cool and creative twitter tribute to the king!

    Nice tribute there.

He did a unreleased duet with Freddie Mercury called "There Must Be More To Life Than This."

I would really like to hear that, I wonder if they will give it the go ahead now?

Quite a lot of Mikes unreleased stuff has been leaked to the internet. I think pretty soon we're going to see a lot of it released officially.

For anyone else who is interested, I'm going to post a lot of his music here that you will probably not have heard. These are pretty much either going to be performances of songs which were tributes to people, songs which were recorded for different albums, but which never made the cut and rare collaborations with different artists.

The Surprise Song - The Jacksons
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju2rc3qSjM0
This song the Jacksons jamming for one of their early Jackson fan clubs. It was almost entirely improvised. Recorded in the late 70's I'd imagine.

The Man - featuring Paul McCartney
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXgim4YXLXk
This song was actually featured on McCartney's Pipes of Peace album, but for some reason most people are only aware of the two Jackson/McCartney duets "Say, say, say" and "The girl is mine"

    Night Line
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6ID_3mn9L4
This as far as I'm aware was one of the songs that didn't make the cut for thriller.

    Hot Street
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rTkFTgMC8Lk
Another song that didn't make it to thriller.

    Trouble
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuN9Hl7h5t0
Another song that didn't make it to thriller.

    Love never felt so good
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lommd54DAr0
Another song that didn't make it on to thriller

    Got the Hots.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiafTFV4AlQ
Another song from the Thriller sessions.

    Carousel
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ma1U1GtgYrI
This song almost made it on to thriller in place of the song "Human Nature". However, Quincy decided not to put it on because it didn't take the sound of the album as a whole in the direction he saw it going in. This song was actually released on the Thriller special edition version, how ever it is a shortened version of it. The link above is the full version of the song.

    You were there
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IjmalHcQh54
This song was performed as a tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.

    If you don't love me
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOQPzR8u2Y0
This song didn't make it to the dangerous album. It has a different sound to it than what most of his songs at that time which was probably why it didnt make the cut.

The demo of Thriller, originally entitled "Starlight"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVtGO1AhyFY

    Get it, featuring Stevie Wonder
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi5I1bzNE-E
This was a duet with Stevie Wonder which was actually released on his album Characters. However, not a lot of people know this song exists. It's a shame really because the two are amazing together.

    Fly Away
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Caif4i93AOk
Written for the Bad Album. Another great song.

    She Got It
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CNkK08moNM
This is a demo, but it's a fantastic song. I think it was from the Dangerous sessions.

    Work that Body
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNZWSbT3Ptw
Another song from the dangerous sessions. I don't think the full version of this song has been leaked yet.

    Xcape
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivviCGxrJ24
I don't know why this wasn't released, but it would have been produced some time around 2001/2002.

    Gangsta
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTC4JNT1ro0
    Collaborating with rapper "tempermental".

    Streetwalker
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAb4LUB2CZo
This is a song that didn't make it on to the Bad album. It was released as part of the special edition of the bad album in 2001. If you've ever heard the original demo of the song "Dangerous" they reused the baseline of this song.

You don't stand another chance - Janet Jackson feat. Michael Jackson
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAkRPzdsaXI
A song from Janet's first album featuring her big brother.

    Minnie Ripoerton feat. Michael Jackson
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWSeCv7FqiM
Recorded in 1980. Not a lot of people will know about this duet.

Just Friends - Carole Bayer Sager feat Mike
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTxQ0F0Qcro
From Carole Bayer Sager's album. Would have been recorded in the mid 70's

Tell Me I' m Not Dreamin'
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGE970BBLZo
A duet with brother Jermaine jackson who never left motown records when the Jackson 5 became the Jacksons

    Mind is the Magic
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmvTWrQRx4A
Michael Jackson was a huge admirer of magic and produced background music for Siegfried and Roy

Colaborating with singer Brandy in "it's not worth it"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0TsZfZFWC4

YEP, his best for me, though I'm a sucker for anything 20/30's, love The Sting.

I listened to his songs last night too and it could be interpreted different ways.

Anyway, no more of that, but something to bear in mind.

One of the great films of all time. Paul Newman was a sad loss to the world also.

In the early 90's an associate of Michael's sued him for apparently copying a couple of songs (1993 I think). They claimed Michael stole the music from a demo they had sent him. Anyway, Jackson fought them and won the case. The below youtube clips is a deposition given by Michael Jackson where they question him about the tape recording of the concept of the song that Michael originally recorded. It gives quite a lot of insight in to his creative process. Very interesting to listen to and Jackson gets pretty pepped up on pain killers half way through.

It is the genius that I will remember.

A Michael Jackson condolences thread... Really????

    Ya. Rly!

Do not post in this thread again or I will ban you.
Go to 4chan if you're looking for jokes.

    Woooooooooooo - stead-y-on!!!...

I was a HUGE Michael Jackson fan growing up. And I mean huge. Am 30 now and I pretty much grew up listening to his music. Remember buying off the wall, thriller, bad on tape. Remember loving them. Remember queueing half way down the Grand Parade in Cork to get into the Capitol Cineplex to watch Moonwalker the movie. Remember watching him on tv sitting into cars to be driven off in front of frenzied, screaming crowds that would run and follow the car as it drove off and wishing (with my sister who'd be watching with me) that we were there too.

Then I grew up, moved on, started listening to other music and heard all sorts of troubling stories about him - rumours, allegations, troubled childhood, odd behaviour, etc. Still loved his music regardless.

I just thought a "condolences thread" was a bit much. Yeah he's dead, and he'll be missed for a whole number of reasons. I just thought a condolences thread was a bit much. Not like any of us really knew him. Personally I mean. Maybe it was just the wording of the title. And it was just a reaction post when I saw the thread. No need for a ban threat!

Anyway, that's all I meant by my post. Wanted to clear that up.

anyone see this "tribute" inmates of a Philipino jail did for MJ?

    http://www.reuters.com/news/pictures/articleslideshow?articleId=USTRE55O6AK20090629&channelName=newsOne#a=9

    Rather unsettling.

I am amazed at that opinion.

How could he be a legend if it comes out that in fact he did the things he was accused of. 750 million albums or not, if he did the things that he was accused of he can rot in hell!

Been away for a few days, but had to clear this up.

What I was merely trying to say was from a musical point of view MJ is a legend. Yeah, sure if he did something wrong (whatever that might be) he wouldn't be the pinnacle of humanity. And IF he did do those things he can rot in hell, sure, but that still would not change his musical achievements.

All I am saying is separate the person and his/her life from his/her defining achievement.

I'd say the same 'bout Phil Spectre. His wall of sound is legendary (imo not to the same degree as MJ) and he is a legend for that. Spectre, is now tarnished, lying in a jail cell and if there is a heaven and hell he'll probably end up in hell, but the part of him that created that musical genious is legendary.

Over the last few days its amazed me how many people are shocked by his death. Ive been talking to people of different ages, backgrounds , nationalities about him over the last few days and pretty much all of them would have at least liked some of his music.

Given that most artists might only appeal to certain demographics its a true testament to his talent that he could have such a wide appeal.

Artists like that are rarity and almost seem to come only once in a generation.

It's in the papers this morning that the kids aren't his....now the fact that they are white as ghosts may have given it away??? How could they possibly be his natural children when he WAS black and the kids are white?

tis very posible - has it never happened that a white couple can have a black baby - it has happened and tis statistically small percentages but can happen... whether they are his biologically or by adoption or surrogacy like the third one they were his - he raised them fed them took care of their well being, education and so on ....he was their father and they were his children....

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

Michael Jackson fans who purchased tickets for his final concerts will receive a full refund or, if they chose, a commemorative ticket, the concert promoter said Tuesday.

    From CNN.

For whatever memorabilia value you might place on this ticket, £75 for a hologram ticket is a bit much.

I know that the promoter is stating that the customer has the choice, but it is playing a bit on heart strings of people who will try desperately to grab onto any memory.

    Sad tbh.

Yeah he raised them and he is their children but how can there be any doubt that they may not be his naturally? Like you said there are statistically small percentages so it would be very unlikely it would happen 3 times. There is no way they are naturally his.

They are as white as ghosts The chances of that happening to a mixed race couple are very very slim. Apparently their mum is know starting proceedings to get them back. But she disowned them when they were born. Whatever you think about MJ, it is sad because those kids will be used as pawns for the rest of their lives.

MJ's dad was at some award ceremony the other day giving a press conference. Dude, you son is dead! go home!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭foxy06

Anyone that signs away their children just for money should never have them again. I would hate to see that woman getting custody of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 51 ✭✭sineadCharl

Totally agree, but it's either that or they go to his mum/dad. The same dad that beat up MJ when he was a kid.

An award ceremony that was turned into a tribute event for his son.
