Heres the idea. Give me some songs we all know but didn't know they were actually a cover ie. the cover is more well known than the original. I just think its nice to go back to the original and hear what it was like. Sometimes its better.

    Heres some of mine
I will always love you - Whitney Heuston (cover), Dolly Parton (original)
The first cut is the deapest - Rod Stewart (cover), Cat Stevens (original)
Everlasting Love - U2 (cover), Robert Knight (original)

    Keep em coming.

    Oh and finally

    Brenda Lee

Elvis I'd say is the most know, for some it may be pet shop boys and lets not forget Willie Nelson :P

Rod Stewart - Downtown Train (Written by Tom Waits)
Manfred Mann - Blinded By The Light (Written by Bruce Springsteen)
Patti Smith - Because The Night (Again, Springsteen)

Absolutely insane to think that The Boss has written two tracks that went on to become full on dance tracks, is a crazy!!

    That reminds me:

Hurt - Originally NIN, more well known by Johnny Cash.

Probably, it's been covered hundreds of times. Still though, Buckley's is the best known.

So Chris Rea had the original... often wondered what he was famous for, apart from that naff Driving Home For Christmas. Fool... is a pretty cool song tho

"Heres where the story ends" is a classic song by The Sundays, butchered and probably more famous for the Tin Tin Out version.

"New England" originally by Billy Bragg had more chart success with Kirsty Macoll (both good versions but Billy's is my preference)

"Only Love Can Break Your Heart" Original Neil Young, but I prefer Saint Etienne's cover.

Red Red Wine by UB40 was much better known than Neil Diamond's version.

Come to think of it, every cover that UB40 did (and they did a lot) was probably better known that the original.
