Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The latter seem a lot more expensive.

We can get a brand new mazda 5 with all the whistles and bells for 23,000, plus our 02 old style megane.

Tom Hogan (RIP) in Galway said we'd need to part with 31,000€ and no trad in for the verso.

    Which is the batter car?

    Thanks
    .

Auto express (I think) reviewed these two last week with the Scenic and rated them:

    1 - Scenic
    2 - Mazda 5
    3 - Verso

Mazda 5 was thought to be the better drive but had less storage space; verso had good space but was boring to drive and cheap interior.

    I've never driven them myself.

nothing cheap about the Verso interior
wife has one for 2yrs and its stood up to a lot of abuse from my 2 hooligans. Never fails to start and on long journeys I find it extremely comfortable to drive

the centre seat in the Mazda is basically an armrest.

Yes, Mazda 5 is really a 6 seater car - but a very good one! - I drive one! Have had it 2 years and really pleased. Had a Scenic before and couldn't wait to get rid of it, kids hated having to manipulate themselves into the 3rd row seats. Before I bought Mazda my local Toyota garage gave me a Verso on loan for a weekend to try it out but I wasn't impressed, again the 3rd row seats were difficult to climb into if you're over the age of 10. The 3rd row seats in the Mazda are also tight but the sliding doors make the 3rd row much more accessible. Sliding doors also make it very easy with baby seats and even for my elderly parents to climb in! Don't buy the petrol version, diesel is essential.

OP if you are looking at brand new it should be noted that there is a brand new model of the Verso about to be launched.

I'd also look at others like the Ford S-Max and Honda FR-V. I'd also look at the possiblity of selling the Megane privately and looking for the best cash price on the new car. I cannot see any dealer giving a great trade-in value on a 02 Megane.

Don't touch a diesel Mazda with a barge pole. Petrol, by all means (I have a petrol Mazda and it's great.), but not a common-rail diesel Mazda (I 'have' one of those too........and it's only good for ship's anchor......... )

    Here's why part 1
    Here's why part 2

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    i used to sell mazda's...

the mazda 5 is a super car. but the petrol model is an absolute dog on fuel consumption. unless you go for diesel. the diesel only comes in a 2lt version which is nice to drive and has that little bit of oomf for when its full, or when your on your own even. that was a good selling point for trying to win over the dads, who really wanted an rx8 but didnt know where to put that 3rd child.

mazda's really are a great car in general. the diesel engine problem is indeed that, a problem but its more commonly attributed to the older mazda 6 cars. in the two years i sold mazda's i think i seen TWO back with engine trouble and mazda replaced the engine for free even after the warranty was up, although i will point out that we sold them as well. im not sure if you bough independently it would be that easy. imo as far as reliability they are second only to honda's but you'll pay more for any honda.

the mazda 5 has the sliding doors, which are super for the kids and grannys. mazda call the car a 6 plus 1 seater so it doesnt match up to some of the competitors in that reagard but the majority of people who bought the car from me only had 2 kids and a grandparent or 3 kids. it was rare that all seats would be full all the time, maybe the odd short trip and the seat is grand for such trips. i wouldnt like to be driving cross country on it but as a garage we regularly had 5/6/7 lads in the car on trips out.

there is only one car available, the executive 1.8. it has ac/alloys/all ew. their are 47 or 48 i think 2litre sport model in the country and the last one was sold in 07. these were ordered into the country by accident and never sent back to england. these are the 2lt sports with the built in sat naz and bigger alloy wheels. again, not great one fuel but a nice drive with that engine. if buying one of these check tyrewear as there is a recall on that model but its a simple enough fix and any dealer will do it in an hour or two.

the verso is a good car. my granny drives one. not becasue she has any kids, she does but there well grown up. but because all she wanted was enough boot space for her golf clubs and her friends and she wanted a 1.6 engine. a 1.6 engine is pointless imo in a 7 seater car. if your going to have it full, then your just burning petrol going nowhere fast. depending on your particular circumstance, the minimum you should be getting is a 1.8

dont buy new, there should be a good few demo models around the country. the 7 seater range took a massive hit over the last two years so dealers are very keen to get them off the forecourt.

the sliding doors on the Mazda concerned my missus when she was looking for a MPV a few yrs back. The thought of them catching a childs hands put her off. I needless to say thought it was a great idea but never thought of that finger catching scenario...

The S-Max is a size bigger than the likes of the Corolla, Scenic or Mazda 5. List is from €34,815 up to a bonkers €46,850. Ours (an 08) would be €38,845 new today, it's a 2.0 TDCI six-speed Zetec.

All that said, it's also a whole lot better than a Corolla Verso, Scenic or Mazda 5. Here's an '06 for €19,000.

Mazda 5 has doors that lock into place for that very reason. I think it is a great car to drive, comfortable and reliable. It is a six seater really though with the centre seat a little fold away one.

Probably one of the more stylish looking people carriers out there too.
