Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Canon 450D kit

Hi, I bought the Canon 450D kit with lens the other yesterday. This is my first step into the world of photography with a DSLR. After doing some research over the past while on must have items to get I put together a small list which includes 1. A bag 2. Tripos 3. Blower/Brush/Cleaning Cloth 4. UV Filter.

Straight forward enough. The problem I have is wth the last item on the list. I went onto ebay to see f I could buy a UV filter to protect the lens I have but I haven't a clue what size I am supposed to get for my EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Is it a 55mm like in the lens name says?

I am sure this is a stupid question but I would be much happier to get some clarification on this.

Also would there be any other must haves for a beginner that you would add to the list above?

    Cheers in advance

    Hey Toe Knee,

This may sound obvious, but if you type the full name of the lens into google along with 'specifications' or something similiar that should sort you out. It should list the filter thread size somewhere. Off the top of my head I think it might be 58mm but don't quote me on that!
Enjoy the camera, be sure to post up some shots:)

    Yeah 58mm is right.

OP: With regards to filters, on the front of the lens on the bottom (opposite side of where it says 18-55mm) it says 58mm and has a little circle thing beside it, that's the thread for the lens.

Thanks guys. I thought it might have been a stupid question alright :) What about the second part of the question, "must haves" for beginners with there new DSLR?

"Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson and the 450D Field Guide are pretty useful books to have and then a tripod and bag.

+1 to the Understanding Exposure book (don't know of the other one unfortunately). It is a must-have for you.

As a fellow 450D owner I'd also recommend getting a polarising filter and one of the knock-off spare batteries from ebay.

Picked up the book today. Will have a good read of it over the weekend and start experimenting. Thanks for the advice
