Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

some of the my favourite pictures are silhouettes - often the horse running along the beach - the fisherman - you know the style i'm on about. have also seen some nice photos of larger things - e.g. - the king charles bridge in prague.

i'm just wondering - how do you get this to work ? do you shoot directly into the setting sun ?? and meter on the brightness of the sky ?? and will this not give you those nasty sun circle things in the picture ??

would love to get any tips or hints or suitable scenes or any advice at all.

    Thanks.

    Good question...

Keeping everything in focus seems to be one trick:

Also you can cheat a bit:

This was worked on to enhance the reflection on the leaf, giving the illusion of a silhouette.

This is one of my fav shots...

    PICT0007%20tweaked%208x10%20300%20dpi.jpg

This shot took all of 10 seconds to set up. (Gotta work fast when you shoot weddings!) The flash was on the floor behind the couple facing the wall.

Taken from the master Scott Kelby:
"There are two basic rules to shooting silhouettes: (1) make sure the subject (or the object) you're silhouetting is easily recognizable. I see lots of silhouette snapshots where my first thought is, "What is that thing?" Keep the object simple, and it will work much better. (2) Position your subject directly in front of the setting sun, so the sun is covered and helps outline your silhouette, then expose for the sky (this will pretty much make certain that your subject will appear in a black silhouette). Silhouette Tip Keep an eye on lens flare when you're shooting silhouettes because you're basically shooting into the sun. You'll see a lot of classic silhouettes where the sun is peeking around the subject just a tiny bit, and that's okay if you like that effect, but make sure it doesn't reveal too much detail in your subjectthey should remain black."
