I have applied for the HDip in Finance and was looking for current students to share the secrets of where to find a good time in Maynooth and the college from the clubs/socs to the best local pubs, where to watch good live bands, where to get a good pint of guinness and where the good places to eat around the area are.....

There are loads of clubs and socs to choose from, there's a clubs/socs day where they all get together in the sports hall and you can join as many as you like, think it's €2 to join each one.

Many a place to choose from for a good night. Roost, O'Neills, Bradys, SU bar, Caulfields, That bar in the GlenRoyal, new Mantra bar is looking fancy too.

The Roost has bands that play occassionally but the SU venue has open mic nights that bands and musicians (and the occasional poet:confused:) perform at.

Don't drink guinness so I can't help you on that one although I've heard Caulfields is good for a pint.

On campus Pugin is the best place to eat in my opinion. Awesome lunches though Roost do a carvery too.

    :)

Nights Out: Always memorable. My mates in UCD and DIT spent more time out here than socialising with their own mobs, says it all really. A reputation like ours doesn't fall out of the sky ;) Expect to find yourself drunk in the 24 Hour Tesco at least twice in your first semester.

A Pint of Plain is Your Only Man: This is actually a big one for me too, a good pint is hard to find in student towns traditionally. Michellenman heard right, Caulfields do a nice pint. The 'Staff Roost' (small bar on the corner next to the DiScO!!1) Is also good for a pint, if you want to see your lecturers out of the game (and maybe score a free pint in the process) its worth a look in. Lovely pints in there actualy.

Live Bands: They need to fix this to be honest. The S.U bar has great potential. I've a good few mates dj'ing indie/electronic stuff and I hope next year we can push for more action in the S.U Venue. In terms of live bands they rarely deliver but when they do (Blizzards, Fight Like Apes, Fred, Sharon Shannon) they deliver good. Less tribute acts, more talent pls.

Food: This is the towns problem.

Roost is great, yes- but who can afford to throw a tenner away on a dinner too often now? Home lunches ftw, or befriend somebody on campus and if you've a few hours to kill do it right. If you're not a bit of a Jamie Oliver character like myself (;)) and really do HAVE To eat in Maynooth, the pub grub is good if not expensive.

The Cafe place across the road from th e 66 bus stop does lovely coffee and cakes, if you've 40 minutes for the bus don't stand in the rain (I bet its raining now up there and all) when you could sit inside.

Best pint is the Clock House imo.
