Hi, we were working a 40hr week but asked to move to shifts,36hr week. The boss said he couldnt afford to pay shift allowance so he would pay us 40hrs pay for doing the 36hrs work.

We have done this 36hr week for 2 years now and since the recession our place has got alot busier. We're out the door with work. A few companies have closed and we have taken on most of their work. The boss let 9 go, most of which were on probation. Then our production increased by at least 30%.

The boss has now come to us with a letter stating he wants us to work extra hours for free, the company is in trouble, blah, blah, its a pack of lies. Its states the only other option is paycuts. He's just using the recession to squeeze every bit he can out of us.

They just propose things, do not even wait for a response and bang-the proposal is enforced, no ifs or buts. He wont recognise a union, laughs at the union the few times a guy whos in the union brought them in.

Q.?What would be the best way forward? We had a meeting, alot of the guys want in to the union now to force him to recognise it?
    Any advice?

ya you hit the nail on the head he is trying to profiteer from the recession, lucky him.

the only option is union but he does not have to reconise it and you cannot force him. if you go out on stike he can technically fire you all.

Collectively can you not meet him or put in writing at least from the staff ie no union at moment your concerns and obvious situation.

he sounds like he is breaking every rule in the contract book get NERA on to him or at least a solicitor acting on all your behalf
