good question. its a phased out format. I still see them in best buy sometimes, and sometimes cards come out with low-end AGP variants. Im actually gonna say go to http://bestbuy.com and shop AGP.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=pcmcat182300050007&type=category

then you can search for it irish.

the 3850 still holds its head hight for the AGP :)

Is it worth mentioning that older motherboards will supply a different voltage to the AGP slot?

Or rather, that newer cards use a lower voltage?

If the card is AGP, then that will have been taken into account. The cards themselves were keyed to prevent accidents (plugging a 3.3v card into a 5v slot), but with an AGP 8x board (will supply all cards correctly) you're fine.

Mecdor AFAIK the HD3850 is as good as you're gonna get. The HD4670 is just a tiny bit stronger on PCIe, but the AGP version has reduced memory speed. Bear in mind the HD3850 is moderately hungry power-wise compared to some old AGP cards - usually ~65W, compared to under 50W for many AGP cards (and the HD4670, regardless of AGP or PCIe). Make sure you have sufficient grunt on your PSUs 12V rail, as PCIe cards "ported" to AGP still use almost entirely 12V power (unlike true AGP cards that use mostly 3.3/5V) - as AGP can only supply 1A of 12V power they derive almost all their juice from the Molex connector at the back. Thus the HD3850 would need 6A of 12V power and many older PSUs from the AGP days may have limited 12V capacity.

Also bear in mind that unless you have a fast Athlon/Pentium D or have one of those rare early C2D mobos with AGP you might find that the CPU will be the bigger bottleneck, rendering the original question moot.
