Announced today, apparently we can switch sides now.
We wanted to give everyone a very early heads-up that, in response to player requests, we’re developing a new service for World of Warcraft that will allow players to change their faction from Alliance to Horde or Horde to Alliance. There’s still much work to do and many details to iron out, but the basic idea is that players will be able to use the service to transform an existing character into a roughly equivalent character of the opposing faction on the same realm. Players who ended up creating and leveling up characters on the opposite factions from their friends have been asking for this type of functionality for some time, and we’re pleased to be getting closer to being able to deliver it.

As with all of the features and services we offer, we intend to incorporate the faction-change service in a way that won’t disrupt the gameplay experience on the realms, and there will be some rules involved with when and how the service can be used. The number of variables involved increases the complexity of implementing this service, but we plan to take the time needed to ensure that it lives up to expectations before officially rolling it out. We’ll go into much more detail on all of this here at http://www.WorldofWarcraft.com as development progresses. In the meantime, we wanted to let you know that because this type of functionality requires extensive internal testing well in advance of release, you may be seeing bits and pieces of the service in the test builds we use for the public test realms moving forward.

I'll bet they charge €20 for it.

Knew it was coming, innevitable really but good stuff.

Now all we need is for them to create the option to switch to a third side, so your enemies are both Alliance and Horde :D

Your character gets morphed into the other side equivalant I assume.

Its a good idea, but could lead to serious server imbalance.

It should be only server to server, not being able to change on a particular server.

It would be nice though because ive a gorgous DK sitting dead at 80 in nice gear on the maelstrom along with a lovely priest

( GJ remember my priest, lol)

what are they going to do about achievements mounts and stuff like that, like all the alliance and horde only achievements, will they be changed to the horde equiv? or will they give us the chance to get the horde/alliance ones also?

Considering you are not allowed to have both horde and alliance on the same server, I guess it will be Xrealm only? Unless they are planning on removing that rule?

I think it will mess up the balance on the servers too if that's the case:eek:.

The thing is, what way are they going to translate race to race?

If you were to take the Orb that turns you into the oposite faction, and the races are linked (Dwarf and troll etc), how would that translate the other way? I'm thinking about classes that are limited to certain races.

If you were to switch a Dwarf to its counterpart (giving the orb as an example, would be a troll), you can't have a troll paladin. What about an Orc Shaman?

If I were to switch a BE paladin to alliance, i'd have the choice of 3 races, and I would want to be able to pick which I get due to racial specialisations.

Thing is, if they start letting you pick, they may as well bring in paying for race changes, which a lot of people have been asking for already. I agree with it too - if they change racial talents, they should give the option (even if charged), to change race as with a lot of people they pick that race purely based on racials.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what way they pull all this off.

I'd still be up for the third faction option though :D
    ...maybe next expansion
