Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is grey close enough to black?

I'm graduating next week, and we were told "Female graduands are required to wear sleeved black or white dresses or white blouses with dark skirts or trousers". I only saw this recently, after already deciding I was wearing this:

The gowns are like this, so the dress will be visible:

Do you think grey is close enough to black to get away with? It's really too late to change now. I have a matching bolero, so it's technically sleeved, and I'll take off the red sash, and wear black shoes. Will it be okay?

Yeah, that'll be fine. I think when they mean black, they mean not pink or blue or something.

That's crazy, I've never heard of graduands being required to wear a certain colour!! But I think that dress will be fine, it's close enough to black!

yeh i agree..whatever about being in school and told what to wear...a graduate??? Anyway..that dress is lovely and is charcoal grey so is practically black. Sure what are they gonna do..take your qualification back? i suppose they dont want you roaming around like Jordan or something ;)

  • I thought it was the norm for graduates to be requested (ordered? :p) to wear black or white. We had a list of other requirements as well. I guess grey is OK though, better than yellow or something!

It's common enough, we had to wear black or white or a mixture of both. I was half expecting someone to turn up looking like a chessboard :D

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure it'll be fine. I figured they just don't want anyone showing up in ridiculous clothes. Still, everyone in the pictures I've seen seems to be wearing either black or white!

I'm sure it would be fine, it looks black to me in the photo anyway! The red sash is lovely, burt i'd take it off just to be safe.

Agreed - when we graduated, we were told black or white, no exceptions. Most people wore shirts/blouses with trousers/skirts, and any dresses worn were very demure even though the gown covers most of what you're wearing anyway.

That's a lovely dress alright, hope you can get away with it, just make sure you wear the bolero with it to cover the "sleeved" angle. I doubt they'll turn you away on the day if you turn up in it, but if it is Trinity you are graduating from, they are pretty strict TBH, and if you could, rather than worrying about it on the day, I'd get something that fell within the dress code just for the ceremony and you could always change straight away afterwards into the dress.:)

It's not Trinity I'm graduating from, it's Edinburgh. I asked a friend who graduated already and she reckons I'll be grand. She said lots of people didn't adhere exactly to the dress code. I'll take off the red sash too.

I might just get a white shirt and bring over a black skirt too, just in case!
