I was just told my by friend that my long hair makes me look childish and young! But I don't wanna look childish I wanna look 18(the age that I am)!

It made me feel quite insecure when she said it and now I dunno what to think.

Does anyone else think that long hair makes you look childish?

If it's all the one length, parted in the middle and clearly hasn't seen a scissors or blowdrier since you were 9 then, yes, long hair looks ridiculous on anyone over the age of 12.

If it's in good condition, with a decent cut & colour (natural or otherwise) and plenty of movement, then it should be fine*

*Unless it's down to your bum, in which case, get the kitchen scissors at it RIGHT NOW

She actually sounds kind of jealous. If you'd rather keep your length, like I do.. just ask your hair-dresser to just trim the ends of you hair, and ask about a new shape maybe. Don't commit to anything unless you are sure!

Don't make decisions about your hair based on anyone else opinions.

I <3 having long hair. I cut it to my shoulder once. It looked fine...but I just felt horrific about it. Never again.

I used to, until I took a pair of kitchen scissors to it, weeeeeeird

Still down to my shoulders though, I'm 24 and have no intentions of cutting it for a while. Just take care of it properly and you should be alright

Whatever floats your boat. I haven't had long hair since I was 14, and would never grow it long again (it's about 3 inches long at the moment and needs a cut), but it looks really great on a lot of people.

I'm working on it. When I was a kid my mum always said it grew so quickly - tut!

I got 8 inches cut off mine 3 months back I had to a dye job gone wrong and stress left it in rag order :( but it's growing, and still mid shoulder blade length.

Top tip to encourage hair growth get Boots nail and hair supplements and kelp exract tablets from a health food store. Make sure you brush it well and hard 3 times a day, make sure you have enough protein in your diet.
Do the above and you can average maybe an inch a month or more.

Anything that can be done to hair I've done, long, short, permed [big mistake] shaved, dreads, every single colour under the sun and sometimes four or five colours at a time - did it all cus I wanted to, got told by some friends they hated some choices [dreads got alot of negative comments] but I liked it and at the end of the day thats all that mattered.

I think certain styles can make someone look childish but it's not really the length, its the style plus the shape of the persons face and sometimes their skin colour and hair colour. If it is something that's stressing you treat yourself to a day at a good hairdressers and change your style not your length.....though honestly I think your friend is just being....hmm won't use the b word....not a good friend, that'll have to do.

DON'T cut your hair!! you'll regret it, I cut my hair because it was the cool thing to do and now I have hair extensions to make up for it! Don't be complaining about looking young you'll be very happy about that in your later years.
    Some people are just jealous!
    All the best! :)

i look younger with long hair too. the age of guys hitting on me changed drastically after i cut my hair last year.
i missed my long hair until recently. i was given a hair extension set by my long hair loving mother. when my bf saw it he said i look geeky and too young with long hair. comparing photos i had to agree, i'd still prefer more length.

Thanks for that Thaed. I do eat lots of protein, but I'm definitely going to try out the supplements. I love my hair when its longer, I can do more with it. I don't generally follow trends when it comes to cutting my hair, in the past I've always regretted it. I don't judge anyone that chooses to have extentions, but when I tried them after a regretted cut... well I had porn hair lol.

OP, don't go near a scissors other than a routine trim. And tell your friend to put a sock in it! ;)

Let's say that you llok young cause you , in fact, are!
Secondly I love long hair, I even got hair extension once to make it longer....if you look younger that's good. When you will be 30 or 40 that is a great thing. Remember looking young has ONLY to be taken as a compliment!

Don't cut your hair unless you wanna di it!

I'm 34 and I still wear my hair long. Ignore your mate and wear your hair how you like it. I looked younger at 18 too, but you know something just bring your id. These days I'm told I look late 20's rather than mid 30's. So it is ultimately an advantage.
Most men I find like long hair. You on top, hair hanging down, feeds some fantasy I think :-)
Ultimately do what makes you happy :-)

I love having long hair..I cut it a few years ago and it took FOREVER to grow back :( I stuck it out though and now it's well past my shoulders.
Don't listen to your mates. It's your hair. I was miserable with short hair!

Another long hair person here - it is down to my bra strap but I am trying to grow it...I love it, it feels me and I have always been complemented on it. I think that it is a case of the green eyed monster with your friend here.

I did have short hair once - it was great when it was really short but I hated it when it grew to more than an inch. In the end of the day of you like your hair the way it is keep it that way.

Don't think it matters too much how long your hair is...as long as it's in good condition and suits you.

If this is you then in fairness your friend could be right :D

    frizzy-hair-bad-hair-day.jpg

My own hair is only a couple of inches long and I think it suits my (teenchy!) face better than long hair...oh, and although my hair is in good condition, it's so fine that it looks like a rats ass when it's long :D My OH isn't hung up on any particular hair length though it seems that the majority of men seem to focus on long hair.

Take an objective look in the mirror and decide if you like your hair. That's all that matters!

Had long hair for years, til I finally copped it didn't suit me and went back to short. Much better now, and I look older this way too.

Often the tangles and the taking forever to dry make me want shorter hair - it's so much easier to maintain... but I know I'd regret it if I cut it. Mine's long enough - a couple of inches below my bra strap. I wear it up all week and then literally "leave my hair down" :D at the weekends - I love how it makes me look quite different when it's down.

I used to think shorter hair would be easier to maintain :(
I swear, the hairdressers must be making a fortune off me, not to mention the styling I have to do every morning, and I can never have a bad hair day and just tie it up!!

Lucky you! It is my dream to grow mine down to my bum! It does take a lot longer to look after it but it is lovely to have long hair. How do you put yours up if I may ask?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,619 ✭✭✭Fast_Mover

I'v long hair aswell. Like Dudess, I wear up during the week (I'm a teacher so want to minimise the chance of getting nits...ouhh, I'm iching even just writing that word!) but leave it down on nights out. Feel like a different person, esp as I'd wear full makeup aswell!
There are days I want to go into a hairdresser and chop it (have had it short several times and it also suits me) but my mother is always saying 'you'll have it short enough when your older..enjoy it while you can!':)

    Certainly. :)

I tie it into a ponytail, then twist it up and stick a claw in it. Down to my bum... oh wow, that would be some work! But yeah, actually *feels around back* I'd probably grow it to the small of my back, which is right above.

    Thanks a million for that!

At the moment mine takes about 40 minutes when I wash it (once/twice a week) and 5 minutes every other day...my hair is very fine so it tangles very easily - it hurts brushing it sometimes.
