After listening to Spltrmxs 303 wailing away i went off searching for something to really emulate the 303 - and found this http://www.d16.pl/index.php?menu=10 - was a bit wary, but soon found it pretty funky :)

Anyone else know of 303 vsts? (maybe not as old as rubberduck ;)

    +1 on ABL

i find the d16 quite nice for barking devilfish mod kinda sounds but the ABL is so close to the original its unreal.

Looking at the wave comparison it does look 99.9% close :) - the d16 likes it dirty for sure also ;) - barks like dog!

little trick for random staccato madness with the d16 -

saw waveform with accent and res up full. switch it to internal seq, load up 10 of your fave patterns and then randomly draw in notes in the midi editor (normally a pattern is 1 full length note spanning a bar), apply groove quantise in your sequencer to taste.

    Check it:
    http://www.acidvoice.com/tb_303_vst_plugin_software.htm

A comparison page of different TB 303 emulations against the real thing.
You can also find shoot outs against the hardware emulators.

I'm on the hunt at the moment for a TB-303 clone. I just downloaded the ABL2 demo, it sounds pretty savage. I had my heart set on getting one of the hardware clones but I'm having second thoughts now after hearing the ABL2 demo. Thanks jtsuited.

Has anyone got an opinion on the hardware clones like the revolution or x0xb0x versus the software ones.

I'm always prone towards hardware especially if its analog which the hardware ones are but that ABL2 demo sounds so good and loads cheaper. With most sounds I don't mind using software or virtual analog but with bass sounds there seems to be something that you can't put your finger on that real analog sounds better and also I like the idea of putting it through real distortion pedals.

I've got a headache trying to decide.

Usually accurate top end information and oscillators drifting in and out of tune ;)

If you stick the ABL through a decent compressor that has significant amounts of saturated character you'll really get that hardware sound.

also the new version is going to have a battery life emulator. the best sequences from 303's were when the battery was dying and the slides and accents took on a life of their own!

    A short example of D16s 808 and 303 emulators:

And here's exactly the same patterns on a real 808 and 303:

D16's 303 emulator is pretty close, their 808 emulator isn't as good though. I remember using rubberduck back in the 90s before I owned a 303, it ran pretty well on my Gateway Pentium II 233Mhz machine!
