    Hi all
I am heading to the french pyrenees with a group of scouts and I was wondering if anyone out there knows if mountain rescue is provided by the state/volunteers like here or do you have to pay for it the event of a resuce.
    Thanks
    Henry

In the French Alps it's a bit of Both, the Gendarmarie do it and there's private guys too.

If you're going with scouts I'd say you definitely need insurance.
CAF do rescue insurance, as do the british mountaineering organisation. Some travel insurance "winter cover" or extra cover for adventure sports cover mountain rescue too.
