Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Longford SUV dealers to pay €10.2m VAT bill

    Friday, 3 July 2009 16:52

Two Co Longford SUV dealers have been told to pay €10.2m to the Revenue Commissioners for underpaying and the non payment of VAT.
It was the first case of this kind ever taken by Revenue at the Commerical Court.
The two brothers John and Pauric Kane run an SUV dealership in Granard, Co Longford.
The case arose from an investigation undertaken in 2004, which found evidence of non-payment of VAT and the underpayment of VAT.
Today, Mr Justice Peter Kelly in the Commercial Court found the defendants had not demonstrated any arguable defence and awarded a judgment against them for the full amounts.
He refused any stay on the judgment and awarded costs against them.

shock horror. these guys are gangsters, the amount of VAT related stories I've heard from customers isn't even funny. glad to see they've got their comeuppance, pity the customers they shafted aren't going to see any compensation.

I, for one, am shocked and appalled that commercialised 4x4s are being associated with the tax averse

"Shock horror, these guys are gangsters" implies a foreknowledge of their "crookedness" and a general reputation of ill-repute.

I just want more info if that's ok with you...

but, the people who have vat numbers would have claimed the vat back anyway if they were charged vat at the point of sale,so the revenue aint losing out?no

<snip> Normally whan you buy something in this country as a VAT reged person/company then the VAT is included in the price and the VAT is reclaimed. If you buy from outside the country as a VAT reged per/comp then all you have to do is show proof of your VAT number and then you dont have to pay any VAT because you are importing something. The only VAT liability there is if you sell it on.

Maybe I'm being oversensitive right now, but I'm locking this thread.

The garage have had a judgement against them, fair enough, but I don't think we should get into how they did it or "everyone knows they're crooks". I don't see how it's productive.
