    Hi all,

Posting this for the better half as she's not regged on here.

The problem started about 1 month ago,Comes and goes,Gets better,Then gets worse,Gets better....

Its her jaw bone seems to "click" when shes chewing, smiling, yawning,Biting and kissing,Shes been told it could be down to grinding her teeth which I have heard her do,Also shes been told its down to stress.Or a bang to the jaw,Now the only thing she does seem to suffer from is grinding her teeth in her sleep which I have heard her do.....

Can anybody shed some light on this and how to maybe cure it or guide us in the right direction?

She visited the dentist today and being honest Im not entirely convinced the bulls%it answers he gave....

Please move this to the correct section if this is wrong.

    Many Thanks

    Mick.

    Hi Mick,
This sounds like a TMJ problem to me (jaw joint) - very common. If there are no symptoms (such as pain, reduced opening, difficulty closing or altered bite when the teeth meet) and no evidence of gridning or tooth wear, then I would typically recommend minimal or no treatment. Avoid chewing very hard food or over extending the jaw by opening too wide when for example yawning.
If the cause is grinding this may mean the problem could worsen - grinding will also cause tooth wear, which can be a significant problem as well as being difficult to treat once the teeth are worn down. A night-time applaince can be made by your dentist which can prevent tooth wear and reduce the tendancy to grind.
There are a couple of specialists who deal with this issue; in Dublin there's Dermot Canavan on Eglington road Dublin 4, or John O'Brien, 91 Upper Leeson St. There's another thread dealing with this issue - see http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055610820
hope that helps and good luck!
