So, I was down in my local Gala yesterday and they were training in 2 new staff.
    Great to see it.

There's also new bar staff in Scraggs.

Has anybody else noticed new staff anywhere?

Don't take it all for what it seems to be..

Tesco have been cutting current staffs hours in order to hire other people on.
    I don't think it's very fair.

i know a few places (pubs in particular) that train in a few youngsters, employ them for about a year or so then when they look for more money, fire them and hire in new youngsters at the cheaper rate. Its not employment, its people taking advantage of the number of people looking for work.

I do have ot say, Scraggs ISNT one of those pubs Im talking about.

I wouldn't be getting too excited now over a jobs here and there in shops and pubs, these are the bottom of the rung jobs unfortunately.
And will not replace the literally thousands of relatively decent jobs the Sugar factory, Braun, Lapple would have given over the years. No point letting the government off the hook over their neglect of Carlow.

So, now that Braun--where I spent 25 interesting years--is just about gone, who is the biggest employer in Carlow?People moan about job losses, butI remember when Braun had over 1400 employes in the mid 90's and these jobs were slowly moved out of Carlow and nobody batted an eyelid. Maybe if we had fought harder to hold on to those jobs at that time,we could have managed to keep Braun in Carlow now!

Thats the reason I was behind voting in fresh young councilors during the elections just gone... why did none of our senior Councilors try more keep these companies happier to operate in Carlow over the years.. everyone could see that they were slowly getting smaller in headcount over the years, someone could have just asked is there a way to help stop that and then maybe they would not have just shut down altogether. IMO

Reminds me of what one local counciller said to me a few years ago on my own doorstep regarding Braun and it's pay levels--"you should be glad that you have a job even on low pay"--and his wife was working in Braun! He wasn't re-elected this time.
Any idea who is the biggest employer here now?

BurnSide say they are currently County Carlow's biggest Employer. whether that be outside of the town I'm not sure!!!

Scraggs always paid well, when you asked for a rise, if you were worth it, you got it. They are very fair down there with hours and the likes. One of the better bars to work in imo, and I worked in quite a few :P

Any of these new people happen to be irish by any chance?

Not being racist, but the amount of foreign people working here is unreal. Fine if they are educated and good workers, but from my experience, they are not. I have no problem with the people working in say the likes of harry curries, they are brilliant, but when you ask "where's the sugar" in tescoes and the employee doesn't have a word of english... WTF??? Same with pizza hut, most are fine, but why the hell would you employ someone with only basic english to serve and take orders from the public?

    It drives me nuts.

burnside has 3 parts to it I think Tullow, Bagnelstown and Carlow but I think their business is on the rocks due to the global downturn. They export a lot to mainland europe and America. So hopefully things pick up there or we could see a lot more jobs lost in Carlow.

Surely merck, Sharpe and dohme are soon to be the towns biggest employer. Hows that place coming along?

One of Burnside's websites claims a group-wide workforce of 350 in 2005, (probably down a bit since then). The IT's site says it has 200 academic staff, then add on the technicians, admin, etc, say 250 total.

MSD will have about 170, http://www.msd-ireland.com/downloads/msd_irelandexec_web.pdf Pg 14:
“This investment will create 170 new high quality jobs in Ireland by 2011,” said Mr Bryan Meehan, Managing Director, MSD Biologics (Ireland) Ltd. “And it is a testament of Merck & Co. Inc.’s ongoing commitment to this country.”
I doubt many of those will be going to locals but there should be some opportunities for local suppliers.

i believe 140 of these are earmarked for maintenance technician jobs. I would assume most of there would hopefully be filled up by ex-lapple , bruan, sugar factory guys/girls. I might even have a look myself. Would be nice to roll out of the bed an walk down the road to work.

  • Registered Users Posts: 910 ✭✭✭tombull82

Yeah, heard that before--pay seems to be fairly bad and think they make you pay for all your tools and uniforms as well. And anything else that they can--like accidents or breakages.Probally a sign of the times! But, a job is a job! Maybe somebody from there could enlighten us as to what it's really like there and anywhere else in town now that we have this big recession on.

I'd say Carlow's biggest employer is not in co Carlow unfortuantely. I remember back in the early mid 90s people here in KK used be very envious of all the good jobs Carlow had. To be honest I think the tables turned a few years ago; KK (still of course) has Glanbia (roughly 600 in the couty at various locations), State Street (400), Vhi (300 or 400 I think), Banking365 (250), Diageo (still there 100). And thats not to mention St. Lukes Hospital and the HSE offices. Not that KK was very well looked after, I think Carlow did far worse from IDA backed investment.

But there are a good number of medium sized engineering companies such as Burnside which have traditionally been good Carlow employer. There are a few around Borris and Bagenalstown still going strong.

Great idea nagero. If anyone knows of some jobs available in or around carlow they could post them up here! I think this would still be fitting within the thread title.

Hey i know that icl place the black celt was talking about are always looking for staff, seems to be a bit of a revolving door there though.

and as for a dignity at work policy?? ha non existent
a union ? employees were told if a union was introduced, the company would shut up shop and everyone would be outta a job then!

and they rule with an iron fist and " if you dont like it, theres the door, we have plenty of cvs in the drawer" policy

besides having to pay for your own tools, specialist tools i may add, your own uniform and god help if you crash a company insured van, you will be paying that for the next two years! oh and the money is sh1t for the grief and abuse you have to put up with.

is there anyone else that has shared my rather unpleasant experience working for these shower of cowboys?

    I wouldn't go
near ICL..they're a terrible company to work for..I lasted ten
weeks, got treated VERY badly and don't think much of their management, training (or lack thereof) or the way they allocate the work or treat their employees. There's a very good reason that they don't retain their staff-because they treat people like cr@p.
