Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Probably wrong area, but maybe not.

My uncle lives in the US but is coming back to work here a few months of the year. He had a drivers licence like 20 years ago but obviously it's expired now. He was just wondering if they can look it up and give him a new one of if he needs to take the test again?

he needs to apply and sit the theory test and then apply for a new provisional licence, where he must be accompioned (sp) by a full licence holder etc etc then after 6 months he can apply for a full licence and sit the tets for the full licence. i think he also needs an RSI number to apply but im not too sure on that.

the licence from 20 years ago is well and truly out of the system by now im afraid.

He wouldn't have to "resit" it - it didn't exist until recently!
apply for a new provisional licence
Learner Permit ;) (Provisional Licences haven't been issued since October 2007).
    he must be accompioned
    Depending on the category!
    by an experienced driver
The regulations specify that the accompanied driver must have held a full licence in the relevant category for at least 2 years but doesn't specify that they have to be "experienced".
after 6 months he can apply for a full licence
If it is in category A, A1, M, W, B or C1, he must have held the Learner Permit for at least 6 months on the day of the test but may apply anytime.
i think he also needs an RSI number to apply
    I don't think so!

His American licence would be good for the few months.

Indeed. There is nothing to stop granny who got her licence 50 years ago and has never driven from supervising the holder of a learner permit.

Apologies - I stand corrected! Just wondering about all the non-nationals doing tests - are they issued with PPS numbers?

they would have to be officially registerd in the country and here legally and possibly entitled to work, therefore they are issued with a PPS/PRSI number. after that im sure theres the guys that vare trading in there home country licence's for irish ones, then of course you'll get the scams in there somewhere.

if hes just coming over for a while can he not just use his liscence from the usa the same way we use ours when we hire a car on holidays ??

American citizens are permitted to drive with a U.S. driver's license for the duration of a visit to Ireland; i.e., as long as their status is that of tourist and not resident. Once you decide to become resident in Ireland, regardless of how long you have been in the country, you must apply for an Irish driver's license.

so i guess its down to what status hes coming over here under ...

the question is if hes coming over here and going back , ild trow a wild guess at saying .. how could they inforce that ?

    point well made .

what would you do if someone like that hit ur car with no insurance ............

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,397 ✭✭✭✭FreudianSlippers

Yeah the problem is he's coming to work locums here 3 months then 6 months back in the US then 3 months back here. He's looking to do it just for ease and insurance... so idk really if he has to retake the test then it's not worth it really.

Other option would be a long term car hire. That would be covered by the US licence.

Dublin City council are not listed here as using pps numbers for Learner permits, so it's not legally required.

If you look at other county council's responses, several don't mention driver licensing/learner permits at all. so it depends on where you live.
