Has anybody got any more information on this?

Iustitia is, as you probably all know, supposed to face towards the people with a straight face on her, balance the scale of justice and be blindfolded (justice is blind to identity, power etc), and so on.

In Dublin Castle, however, she is portrayed facing the British rulers in the castle, not wearing a blindfold, the scales are not balanced and she is smiling at them.

    Here are a few pictures:

So, does anybody know the history to this?

She's not blindfolded, but she does appear to be blind all the same.

The tipped scale doesn't look intentional to me, and there's a suggestion on one of those photo posts you linked to that it's a product of rainwater running down her hand into one of the pans.

I can confirm the above. At least that's what I was told when I took a tour of Dublin castle.

Incidentally the tipped scales is on the side of the tax office which got a few laughs.

I think someone has drilled holes in the pans of the scales to stop them from tipping now!

The rain really does effect every aspect of Irish life.

Iustitia can be blindfolded or not.

She's not blindfolded over the Old Bailey in London either
