The story I've heard repeated about the Brooks site is that it is one of the locations being looked at for the new Garda station.

Could make sense. Easier access to most of the town from there.

Maybe they could put the new ALDI there and, if the store is large enough , incorporate the Garda Station into the ALDI store ;)

I heard one of them is going in to the old timber yard and the other beside/behind Sligo Office Supply.

I think the owners of both stores should kiss and make up and do a massive ALDI'IL or LIDALDI mega superstore

That's a common misconception, Aldi & Lidl are just normal business rivals, Aldi is the company where two brothers fell out and split the business into two entities, Aldi Nord & Aldi Sud, With Aldi Nord having the north half of Germany and most central European countries, and Aldi Sud having the South half of Germany and Ireland & UK, among others.

If it was two irish brothers they would've ripped the business apart with wrangling.

Yes, it's common for people to think that.

ALDI stands for ALbrecht DIskont, named after the Albrecht brothers.

Lidl is also a surname, I believe.

Friends with one of the managers in Lidl who was told they've bought the timber yard & it's going to be a distribution centre, not a supermarket site.

Seems a waste of a prime town centre site, when there are loads of units in collooney which could be used. It would make more sense to develop it as retail / housing rather than distribution.

No way in hell is that site big enough for a distribution center.

As said above, Colooney would suit for a distribution centre. Dual carriageway to and from. Why bring a load of trucks into an already busy series of roads and junctions? You have the school, Hanleys NCF, fuel, and recycling in one corner. Finisklin industrial estate in another. All leading back onto the relief road

Where are going to distribute to? Lidl and Aldi have massive distribution centres in Naas that service the whole country daily.

    Yes, Aldi have two warehouses:

"The stores in the Republic of Ireland are serviced by two Regional Distribution Centres, based in Naas, Co. Kildare and Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. The regions combined boast a total of over 120 stores with further store openings scheduled for both regions.

Opening in 2004, Aldi’s first Regional Distribution Centre in Ireland was located in County Kildare. All of our stores nationwide were serviced by this centre until demand and growth required the introduction of the Mitchelstown Region in September 2013."

I'm inclined to agree. For scale, this is the Lidl distribution centre in Mullingar. and this is the one in Cork

Sure loading bays alone and trailer parking would take a huge chunk of the site then workers car parking wouldn't leave much space for a large warehousing.
Plus the added cost of site clearance,a greenfield site would make more sense.
Look it would be great to see somthing like this happening jobs on construction jobs in the warehouse, and prospects of transport companies basing trucks and drivers here leading to maybe more jobs there.

I had a quick look back through all the planning applications submitted to Sligo CoCo for the last few months and didn't see anything from either.
