modric is probably more points tbh...
I'm trying to make the same choice...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,793 ✭✭✭✭JPA

Essien is great but he scores quite rarely, although usually they are belters.
Modric should be better this year if used properly.
Could be a star in fact.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,328 ✭✭✭Mezcita

Ah sure, lets have both in the team.

    1: Green
    2: Corluka
    3: Baines
    4: Evra
    5: Modric
    6: Gerrard(C)
    7: Jimenez
    8: Essien
    9: Arshavin
    10: Cole
    11: Defoe

    12: Brown
    13: Zayatte
    14: Collins
    15: Bent

Jimenez could play up front for the Hammers if Ashton moves to Stoke.

    Doyle
    Fletcher

    Subs:

Hart, Ridgewell, Zayatte & Murphy (Hoping he heads to Hull)

    Too many left backs. ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Tosic is a bit of a mind-boggling choice. There's no way he'll be regular enough to justify a place in the starting line up.

Santa Cruz is a bit of a risk with Tevez and the impending Adebayor signing - might be lots of rotation up front for City.

  • Registered Users Posts: 289 ✭✭dublinhead

I agree, Picking any Man City forwards is a high risk move! Hughes will do well to keep them all happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,568 ✭✭✭thewools

    As it stands so far:

    WORK IN PROGRESS

    1: Sorensen

    2: Zhirkov
    3: Hangeland
    4: Lescott
    5: Ridgewell
    6: Vidic

    7: Jimenez
    8: Kuyt
    9: Arshavin
    10: Lampard

    11: Beattie

    12: Hart
    13: Doyle
    14: Mendy
    15: Benitez

Will be looking to play a 5-4-1 or 4-5-1 formation for most of the year as it shows that strikers are not the bread earners!!!

Not sure about Zhirkov - where will he play? A.Cole wont be dropped thats for sure!! Left Wing I presume? Could be rotated with Malouda perhaps which might be bad!!

Would love to have Gerrard, Lampard and Arshavin all in the middle but decided to strengthen my defense and start Kuyt instead!!!

So with Man City moving in on Adebayor..already after getting Santa Cruz and Tevez..and Robinho and a few others already there...whos gonna start for them, whoever does could be worth having on your team but too many options??

They have Bellamy, Caciedo, Benjani, Tevez, Adebayor, Robinho and RSC. I'm staying the hellaway from that choice for my FF picks.

I'm not sure how they are going to do defensively this year either so I'm going to completely avoid them until Christmas.

I reckon they will be starting Robinho on the left wing now so he wont be "up front" anymore.

Say this is the most probable line up as it stands (when Ade completes transfer)

    Given

    Zabaleta, Richards, Dunne, Bridge

    Barry, De Jong / Ireland---

    Tevez
    Robinho

    Santa Cruz, Ade

Would Ireland start instead on De Jong and play more defensive???

Will Wright Phillips get a sniff??

The likes of Johnson, Petrov, Elano, Bojinov, Evans, Bellamy etc should seriously consider a transfer request form :D

What do you lads reckon between -

Kevin Doyle @ 5.5m, guaranteed started and should net a few

Michael Owen @ 9m - uncertain starter but will thrive on the service

Owen could do anything. Maybe have a look at him in pre season.

Probably another year of doing well up until sometime after Christmas where I seem to fade away due to lack of interest (well that is what I am trying to convince myself anyway).

    Team is obviously provisional.

    Given

    Corluka, Warnock, Zhirkov, Hangeland,

    Arshavin, Gerrard, Modric, Milijas,

    Beattie, Owen,

    Hart, O Brien, McCann, Doyle.

Players highlighted are the only players I really want to keep, the rest could change, defense is a bit weak maybe.

Not too sure on Owen, maybe Ireland instead of Milijas and take Owen out.
Not sure on Ireland at City and the role he will have this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

Im surprised at the amount of people willing to fork out what I feel is a risky 8.5 on Michael Owen.

I think he was a good signing for United and can see him doing well, don't get me wrong. But I would have strong doubts about him making the Starting XI (certainly at the beginning). I would expect it to be Berbatov and Rooney. Add to this his proneness towards injury and 8.5 seems steep.

That said 8.5 is low enough that if he starts banging in goals and forcing his way into the starting XI and looking like the Owen of old, his fee won't be massive to transfer him in. Even if he goes up to 9.0, thats cheap good value for a starting, scoring top 4 striker.

So for these reasons I would really look on Owen as a 'wait-and-see-what-happens' type player.

    Schwarzer

    Evra
    Cole A----Carragher
    Vidic
    Hangeland

    Gerrard
    Valencia

    Anelka(c)
    Beattie
    Doyle

Putting my faith in defence this year for the points again.

Can't believe how few people have Anelka considering he was the top scorer last year and chelsea's easy opening 6 games and how many have Ardshavan considering he doesn't play one week and plays united in the first 4 games.

Lots of people going to be looking at week two and thinking, well crap, why did I do that.

You can always trade up for him later.

The chance of Nelks playing second fiddle to Drogba (whether it be on the bench or wide right) is what puts me off bringing him in. That said, he could well be a good purchase, especially with Chelseas opening fixture list. Its just hard to know exactly how Ancellotti might juggle his attacking options.

I'm just quite conservative and am only splashing out big on players that I would see as guaranteed points-scorers and guaranteed starters, so my big purchases are Gerrard and Lampard. Even if they are that little more expensive, I'd rather be going in with players like this who I know are going to be at the centre of most attacking plays and definitely on the pitch.

Looking at the fixture list and out go Arshavin and Crouch and in come Anelka and Essien!

I not have a balance of 0.5, and can trade played around if needs be.

    1: Given

    2: Ashely Cole
    3: Evra
    4: Bridge

    5: Ireland
    6: Ashley Young
    7: Dempsey
    8: Modric
    9: Essien

    10: Beatie
    11: Anelka

    Subs:
    GK: Sorensen
    DF: Corluka
    DF: Bramble
    FW: Doyle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭Carcharodon

I don't see why people are worried about having Arshavin because of the fixture list, you can always transfer him when Arsenal have no game and just because they are playing United would not bother me, I have him in my team because I expect that he can do very well against most teams, I think I remember him banging in a couple against one of the top four last season.

Might wait and see with Owen and just go with Ireland unless anyone has any doubts on whether Irelands 9 million price tag is worth it, will have to wait and see on what else Man City do in transfer market, they have a lot of attacking options at the moment that could restrict Ireland a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,251 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

My provisional team. Some changes may still be made:

    Given

    Ashley Cole
    Martin Skrtel
    Patrica Evra
    Andy Griffin (Stoke)

    Frank Lampard (c)
    Andrei Arshavin
    Matthew Taylor (Bolton)

    Kevin Doyle
    Fernando Torres
    James Beattie

    Subs:
    Joe Hart
    Kamil Zayate (Hull)
    Teemu Tainio
    Luis Boa Morte

What do people think? I know Arsenal have a few hard first ties but I think Arshavin could be a revelation this season, especially now with Adeyabor gone. He showed glimpses last year and I think he'll really push on now that he's had a half a season to settle. I prefer too to just pick my team as I want it to stay than be basing my team on the first few games teams have.

I had Gerrard in and Hugo Rodallega as another striker but then I decided that Torres might be a better bet than Gerrard so I subbed Gerrard out for Matt Taylor (who takes the set pieces for Bolton, usually plays right behind Davies and had a decent season last year) and replaced Rodallega with Torres.

The only weak part of the defence is Kamil Zayatte or Andy Griffin but they were all I could afford and the rest of the defence is strong.

I think I've two good 'keepers too.

Why worry about the 2nd game week?
It'll all balance out and if you're happy with your team you shouldn't feck it up for one gameweek and 6 teams.

Yeah I've gone for Sorensen and Hart as my 2 keepers at 4.0 each. They will be rotated around, and hopefully I'll make enough right decisions for them to earn me some cheap points.

Hmm cheers for the input. I'm only a casual football fan and my knowledge is lacking in certain areas!

Still, it's early days and I'd already changed my team twice before settling on that one. My whole team could be different by the time the season starts. Then I'll probably end forgetting all about it until the season ends.

Played in the Fantasy league last year but not as a boardsie.
What's the story on using my boards name rather than the name I used in the league last year?

Haven't picked my team this year yet....

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

Changed my team several times over the last week or so, but think I've finally settled on it.

Going for an unorthodox 5-2-3 formation to start, Gerrard and Lampard being my 2 big money players. Don't want to give away too much more as there may be scouts from my private league watching...

Yeah I'm watching. I'm almost certain you'll change your team again before the start, and anyway what use would it be to me if I knew your team? It's not like I'm gonna copy it as I have no lead to maintain (yet).

    More defenders.

The points for the top 5 strikers last season:
    Anelka 179
    Agbonlahor 146
    Robinho 145
    Van Persie 145
    Berbatov 138

    And defenders:
    Vidic 187
    Lescott 172
    Carragher 161
    Bosingwa 156
    Hangeland 147

Vidic costs 8m, the same price as Yakubu, Carew, Bellamy and Eduardo. He will pick up more points them all of them guaranteed. Woodgate is the same price as a bunch of strikers that probably won't get their game.

Midfield is we're the big points are so probably stick with 5 in there but go 3-5-2 at least. Put it this way, Michael Owen will not outscore every defender yet he's dearer than them all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

btw, N'Zogbia is my pick for surprise of the season at 5.5m. He'll be back playing in his favoured attacking position and Martinez will play the football to suit him. With Wigan's lack of strikers atm he'll probably play in a more advanced role too.

    Read the rules maybe??? :D

You have to have at least 3 defenders in your starting lineup.

Also Owen is on a pay per play deal, im suprised how many people have wasted their money on him and have him as a main striker in their team. He is rarely going to start and if he comes on as a sub you dont get the same points as a starting player so i cant see it as anything but a waste of money to have him in your starting lineup ahead of other strikers gaurenteed their game and points.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭doonothing

Haha! I oughta read the rules alright...

    * Berra replaced by Lescott
    * Mikel replaced by N'Zogbia
    * Owen replaced by Cresswell

    Better?

Thanks for all the advice guys, I am a blatant novice at this stuff and am entering a mini-league with my friends for the first time and, well, my aspirations aren't to win obviously, just not be humiliated :p

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

Read my above post about Owen. 8.5 = too much at this stage with the info we have IMO.

Ditto Nani and Mikel. Both won't start in all liklihood and thus are overpriced purely because they play for a top 4 team. You will get far far better value for money going for players like Noble (6.0), Collison (5.5) or Dempsey (6.5), or even Pienaar (6.5), who should all start EVERY game for their respective teams, and are likely to chip in the odd goal or assist.

Also I notice a lot of people putting in P.Neville in their team from Everton. I have a feeling that a lot of people are putting him in based on his score from the 08/09 season in which he scored very well considering his price. But this year he is classified as a midfielder, while last year he was a defender which is a huge difference. The chunk of his points last year came from 4 point clean sheets, which he will only be picking up 1 point on from now. Outside of this I can only see him picking up max 1 goal and 2-3 assists at the very best. Neville will definitely pick up cards as well. I would rather have Mascherano at 5.0 who could pick up some bonuses plus probably more 1 point clean sheets, or Anderson at the same price who will possibly hold down a starting spot this year and will play a more advanced role for a top team.

Or otherwise go for a Muamba or a Mullins who I feel will earn as many points as Neville and save 0.5 for elsewhere.
