Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi
How do you search for files containing "xxxxxx" in Vista ?

doesn't seem to be under Advanced search ...

Type "indexing" in the start menu field and click "Indexing Options". Then make sure the location you're searching in is listed and make sure the file-types you're searching in are set accordingly to search inside them, in the Advanced options.

That's the problem with Vista & XP - they only search certain file types. That's why I was so upset to say good bye to Win2K that was the last Windows with normal search which worked on every single file - the way it's supposed to be. Rumour has it that Win7 has improved search - anybody knows if they properly restored it?

XPs searching capabilities were a serious downgrade, but Vista's indexer works quite excellently actually. It doesn't search all file-types by default as doing so would churn up the average user's hard drive unnecessarily (it's not something everyone uses), but you can quite easily configure it to (as I've said above).

I'm trying to avoid Vista as much as possible but I'm still unsure it can search all files even with indexing. Does it search any file extension or files without extensions? That's my main gripe with XP - it can only search file of certain registered extensions while an average user may have dozens if not hundreds of unknown extensions which won't be searched. And files without extensions are always missed too. I personally find it unacceptable and unforgivable.

As I said, Vista doesn't search many files' contents by default, but it provides this options panel to set to whatever you personally prefer:

Where you can choose for each individual filetype whether you want to search "Properties Only" or "Properties and File Contents".

Yes, I think I understood that :) My point is that if I have a hundred of unregistered but used extensions, I'm screwed, ain't I? And files without extensions are 100% bullet-proof, too. Aren't they? So why Vista's search is better than XP's? I think I can make XP also search inside registered file extension. Both seem pretty useless, in my opinion.
