I seem to have got away without being attacked. Beginers luck on a first crop?

    Beginers luck...... possibly

It also depends on when you sowed them, if you sowed them at the end of May or begining of June you may have missed the first wave of them.

Also as you have not had carrots there before that helps, it is best to rotate vegetables any way.

there will be another wave in august, also pull them will release the carrot smell into the air (when thining or pulling to eat) and attract the fly.

Whats the best way to avoid them?

Ive heard they only fly a certain height so if you sew them in barrels.

Aside form that, gardening fleece is quite expensive isnt it?

Yes putting up some barrier is one of the best ways to stop them. Typically they do not fly very high so if you can put something around the area, fleece, glass, clear plastic or something like that it will help a lot, 18 to 24 inches should do it.

Cannot say how much the fleece is as i have never used it, sorry.
