Is the GPS advertised on the likes of Nokia 5800 through the GSM network ?

or is it like a standard GPS picking up the satellites?

Nokia generally do GPS built into the phone rather than use your network.

so it would pick up a number of satellites

It's actually a combination of both.

It picks up the satellite signal and it uses the mobile phone network to find your location faster. It's called A-GPS (a being assisted).

true but they can charge !!! so be wary of that or just use the GPS on its own .... its pretty much the same anyway.. it will get your location more accurately than using your network

Some gps enabled fone do use data to help speed up getting a fix, i.e. A-gps. It basically finds the location of your current cell mast.
