One thing about Mr. Jigsaw - he's got some very impressive time management skills. Managing the process of sourcing abandoned factories, recording tapes and videos, and setting up devious traps, finding suitable victims, all the while suffering from a brain tumour, is no mean feat.

True, he had an assistant for some of it.

Plus the store clerks must not be the most suspicious.

"Another fifty feet of razor wire Mr Jigsaw? My you are going through that stuff quickly. I'll just get someone to carry it to your truck, along with the chains, choloroform, recording equipment and pigs head you purchased earlier. Will you be paying by cash or credit card today sir?"

In a way it's like the franchise itself.

The first one was fresh and original....then came the sequels!

Perhaps he simply ordered all the material from a variety of online stores. Be a lot less suspicious.

That's true. This is why I'd never make it as a serial killer - I just don't see the obvious solutions :(

If I were jigsaw Id break into B and Q at night time and get everything I need plus other random stuff in trolleys to sell off to ppl for profit so no one gets too suspicious:D

Oh I get it now, they are trying to be all clever now like Prison Break by attacking the "suits" that make all the decisions that we should be making for ourselves. You will fail Saw franchise! :pac:

That being said, I did find the latter part of the teaser delightfully sinister. Then again, that's probably the only good part of the movie and they just put it in the teaser to get people interested!

I've only read the first page of this thread, and don't wanna see any spoilers, but I finally only got to see the first Saw last night (:o ya I know), but is it worth seeing the rest, or should I just leave it and have enjoyed the first and not waste my time with the rest:D:confused:

Don't bother watching the rest, the first is the only good one in the series.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,013 ✭✭✭✭jaykhunter

Just like any franchise they'll keep making the films as long as there's a viable market for it. I think of it as "I can just 'not' go see the film" if I don't think the quality is good enough. I don't know how much better the SAW films would be if they had 2 or 3 years in between movies but at the moment, the films are good enough for me to keep watching them every year. Sure it's not as good as SAW 1, but the standard is fine for me.

Sure they could've made Superman 5 & 6 after Quest for Peace; i'd just choose not to watch it. I'm sure someone else enjoys it; and I don't have to see it, so live and let live :)

Whilst I agree the first is best, I think it's unfair to say the rest are poor. True they've become notorious with (actually, best not to spoil anything) but I'd recommend at least seeing Saw 3 and 4. Honestly though, you should just watch them all in quick enough succession. They all tie together; which is why I'd say watch Saw 2 aswell, even though I thought it was the poorest of the SAW films. If you enjoy nasty traps with a 'moral core' (which I do!) then the SAW films are a good hoot.

They announced that there would be 9 films years ago. Every Halloween we would get one. I don't mind them to be honest. the original remains a fantastic film and one which a lot of other torture films could learn from.

    What films would these be?

Given that the thread is about Saw 7-9 I would take a wild guess and assume that I was referring to Saw.

1 is very good, 2 is alright, i gave up at 3 as did most sane people...

I've enjoyed them all, bar V. The latest one was brilliant IMO. Loved the stab at the health system :)

Should have made it clearer that 'other torture films' meant 'other Saw films'.

Shit films aimed at prick teenagers. The idea of all these sequels being made just offends me.

I was referring to other films in the so called "torture porn" genre. Saw remains a fantastic film and while the sequels have been on a downward spiral the original is a modern classic that people like Eli Roth could learn a lot from.

Ah so you trying to be smart failed in the end as I was correct in saying that you were referring to other films.

Hostel is a bit better than Saw, but Hostel II is a travesty. I chuckled at the 'modern classic' bit tbh :(

I hate these films. "Saw" the first one, and that will do me. I cant understand what the attraction to torture porn is. Maybe you have to be a certain age and of a certain mental disposition. I sat with 3 mates one night looking at Hostel and while I was thinking "Ok a film which is basically wall to wall gratuitous violence and that its be all and end all - Why would any sane person derive pleasure from this"
I am assuming most people watch movies to derive pleasure from them.

I will watch anything and most films with graphic gore dont bother me in the slightest, when its in the context of some kind worthwhile plot. But watching people being tied up and sliced into rashers just for sadistic pleasure??? Thats just FUBAR imo.

As for a 7th, 8th and 9th installment. Enough is enough. Its bad enough for any film to descend into the farce that would be 8 sequels. But for shít like this to warrant that many movies, its fúckin disturbing.

Ah, the old torture prawns are at it again. :pac:

People watch movies to derive a wealth of emotions from them. This can be excitement, or happiness, but people might watch a film that utterly depresses them like Schindler's List or The Elephant Man, and come out of that having a worthwhile experience. Is feeling sad pleasure? No, but many people can watch a film that makes them feel sad and feel that they've just watched a thoroughly brilliant film. Likewise, is feeling scared pleasurable? It's not, but when a good horror engages you and genuinely scares you, it can be a terrific experience. Some people watch David Lynch films, be utter disturbed and unsettled and love it.

With gore or extreme violence films, being disturbed or repulsed is the point. Martyrs for example disturbed me and made me feel absolutely sick to my stomach and I think it was easily one of the best horror films of the decade.

This "Torture porn" nonsense is alarmist Daily Mail grade garbage.

Agree with the above but will add that Inside > Martyrs. I've never felt so sick in my life watching a movie. And yes there was suspense and tension, not just gore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I prefered Martyrs myself, but Inside is definitely an exceptional film, and a great example of a well crafted gore film with lots of suspense, something the neverending Saw film completely lack.

It seems about once a page in this thread you come on and give out about the SAW franchise, specifically it's sequels. We get it, you hate the sequels. Nobody's forcing you to watch them but obviously enough people like them so they keep making them. A great film turned into a whored-out franchise is nothing new.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 103 ✭✭Raging Bob

    A great film :D

It was interesting at the time but flawed. I think I was pretty generous when I gave it 7/10.

But everyone else got that I was referring to Saw sequels aswell as other films in the so called genre.

Saw remains a modern horror classic, it's one of the most thrilling and original horror films in many a year and while the sequels have sullied the name somewhat it is still a fantastic film. That it relies on a great story rather than inventive deaths just hammers home how badly the series has gone downhill.

Just so I'm clear here, what are you putting Saw up against? Hostel? It's below that fwiw.

The two of them share many similarities, scenes of gratuitous torture and a flimsy story at best, Saw the original is superior to Hostel as it has a great story but the sequels lose this edge. Hostel 2 is a superior film to the original, a far more entertaining film.

Oh man, you're way off :D Not sure what you've been smoking but good night. Even Saw was better than Hostel II.
