where to study

Hey folks, I am going back to college in 2011, and Im wondering where to go. Ultimate goal to be reached is forensic anthropology, but have to start off with archaeology ( which Im really interested in)
I would love to hear your opinions/experiences of different colleges, as Im a bit lost as to who offers the best course.

You better start with a proper degree in forensic anthropology in the beginning and continue on to masters and PhD. Particularly in forensic fields the standards for expert witnesses in court are slowly changing and the organisations in the UK are already working towards doctorates for expert witnesses as too many masters students went out after their degree and messed up in court. Once you are torn apart in court by other experts you are finished.

Have a look at the BSc degree in forensic anthropology at Dundee University. You can then follow it up with a MSc in Human IDentification and a PhD. Professor Black is an expert and they work closely with organisations that would give you an opportunity at international case work.


Ireland is way too small for any full-time forensic anthropology or archaeology work though (make sure to make a distinction between the two) and there is a lot of red tape before you can actually get involved in forensic work.

EDIT: If you want to pursue forensic archaeology instead I would say Bradford University or Bournemouth may be good options but there are more out there. UC London for example.

Cheers, thanks a mill for that. Unfortunately Ive got two small kids in school so movin to a different country isnt an option Im afraid, at least not for the duration of a degree, what ever about a further course. Its the long way for me, archaeology, then physical anthropology, then forensic, so thats why Im sussing best courses here. Appreciate the links, thanks again

well, in that case consider UCD. The reason for this is that the Medical School Medical Degree has a Level 1 module called Introduction to Forensic and Physical Anthropology which is accessible to all students (medical, arts, science etc.) so as an archaeology student you can still take this module/these modules. Another module (level 2) is Palaeoanthropology also in the Medical School. It is all based in the human anatomy section and there are possibilities for Masters research in physical anthropology and leading on to PhD research.

i second this. ucd has a top notch archaeology department, prob best out of all the universities i would imagine. you will be going back as a mature student and to be honest half the archaeology class are mature students which im sure would be nice to know for you. similarly archaeology offer the option of pursuing a full major in archaeology so you can focus your entire degree on it.
