Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi,

I have recently come accross some old rolls of film which are about 5-6 years old. Will these film still be able to be developed or do they go "off?"

Film can deteriorate over time. It is best to have it processed within the time specified. How much it will degrade depends on the type of film & the conditions under which it has been stored. A roll of Infra Red Film will degrade very quickly but normal films will be more stable. If the film was stored in a fridge then it will help preserve it, but exposure to heat will hasten the deterioration.

I would say, at a guess, that after 5-6 years in a drawer that there may be a bit of degradation but not so much that you will notice anything. Only way to find out is to have it developed.

As an aside, a few years ago there was an expedition to Everest looking for the camera that George Mallory had with him in 1924. His well preserved body has been found & they thought that if the camera he had was located the film could be developed & it would answer the mystery if he had summited or not. As the film would have been in sub-zero conditions it was felt that it would be possible to get images from it, assuming it was not damaged to allow in light. Unfortunately they did not locate the camera, only some over due bills he still had in his coat pocket.
