East coast travel for Christmas/ New year - Advice please!

Hello all, I'm arriving end of october, thinking of buying/renting a campervan in Cairns and travelling down along east coast with intention of spending new years eve in Sydney...just wondering have any of you done this kind of trip? Any ideas of where to stay along the way for christmas? Also, do you need to book the camp…

Any help would be really appreciated...difficult trying to sort it all out now!
