Hi, you can get good dog books from book shops and your local vet should have some aswell, but there usually very expensive... you would probably get all the information you need from google, im sure theres websites on st bernards...

have you got one or are you thinking about getting one? we get them for grooming a few times a year, they are very quiet dogs but very very big especially the males....

thanks for the replies, my only problem with using google is that its all the same limited info just thought there would be a couple of good books i got a few on newfoundlands before,

Crafty-Chel thinking of getting one but it would be a long way off yet just doing my research, i know they are on the larger side of life but i have always liked them

Sorry I don't know any books - but I visited someone I know who has 2 recently, and it was amazing. Gorgeous, affectionate dogs but reeeeeallllly big and messy. My jeans were soaked through with dog drool when I was leaving, and they messed up the room we were in in about 2 minutes. The place was covered in dog hair and drool - and I mean dripping in it! :D

    Hilarious!

I loved visiting them, but for me - I couldn't live with that amount of cleaning up!

i owned a st bernard for over three years untill tinkers poisioned him , they are quite possibly the least agressive of any breed of dog , they are big softies and would kill you only with kindness , on the down side they are huge although they dont eat as much as you might think due to the fact that they are extremley lazy and dont burn that much energy , they are a very very sensitive dog , they dont like to be alone for long at all and are quite needy , as other posters have said , they drool , when they come into the house , one shake of the head and its like a something about mary scene everywhere , seriously the drool is a constant occurence but i didnt mind as the love you get from a st bernard makes up for everything else , i intend to get another one eventualy but i still havent gotten over the last one

I have at the moment what i thought was a white boxer but turns out i was done, my own fault, anyways i have what is thought to be a boxer x st bernard. she is only 12 weeks old but what a big girl. I have been told that while St bernards are big softys they have to be properly socialised or there will be lots of problems. such as fear aggression which i would immagine could be very dangerous in a large breed dog. This is why i will be doing as much as pos to make sure i do have Roxie proberly socalised. So i will be in the same boat as the op to try and find out as much as i can.
