Im not in any way interested in a career in economics of finance. This is the only degree course that will allow me to teach both business and Geography in secondary schools.

Could you not do business and geography as an arts degree?

Yes I could, maynooth is the only Uni that offers this. However its not recognized by the teaching council for teaching business

anyone know what MH401 Finance & Economics is like, have a mate considering doing it ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 964 ✭✭✭heffo500

I'm doing it and I'm in first year just finished semester 1. You have to do accounting which was up to now the same as the leaving and economics which I've never done nor have I done accounting. Macro economics I found interesting while Micro can seem repetitive. You also have the choice of doing maths or an arts subject. I tried maths for 2 weeks and if your not good at honours maths I'd say stay away so I changed to Business which are management lectures with Dr.John Cullen (absolute legend of a lecturerer. He keeps the lectures interesting.) Now were doing marketing. If you do what I'm doing at present I end up with a Bachelor of Arts degree I think so I'd say do Business and Accounting As so far were doing the same and they don't do maths. (this may change) but they as far as I know get Bachelor of Business Degrees. It's still a good course though.

Have you applied for the undergrad or the MA Moon Indigo?

I know of a few people doing the MA - it seems to be a really good and interesting course. Quite a lot of work placement in it too, which is useful.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭Moon Indigo

Thanks for the quick reply and the infor. I have applied as a mature for the undergrad. What kind of job opportunites is there on this course? I am not so sure about the long term when it comes to working with youths. It seems like a great course but so many people are saying its close to impossible to get on. I originally wanted to work with the homeless or in that capacity but if I get on this course Happy Days! Thanks again for your help.:)

I'm doing the Business and Management Undergrad course at the moment. It is really good but beware there is A LOT of group work. I'm not sure what the Masters course is like but those lecturers frickin' love to give group assignments.

Hey, can anyone help me here?

I was wondering, what are the differences in first year between doing Computer Science & Software Engineering, and doing Science and picking Computer Science as one of my subjects?

    Hey guys!
I'm considering applying for a Social Science degree in NUI Maynooth, does anyone have any experience with this course? What is it like? I feel like it really would suit me and it does sound interesting but I'm scared that it's maybe like a social care course (I already know people that have completed this course and they seem to mostly have jobs in nursing homes etc) whereas I would rather go down the social worker route! Are there good career prospects with this course? Or is it just too similar to a social care course? Can anyone help I'm so confused thanks :)

Social Care and Social Science courses are totally different, well from what I understand anyway. In the social science course in NUIM you do social policy, sociology, and another social sciences subject (geography, history, anthropology, economics etc) in first year, and then you pick 2 of the subjects to carry on for 2nd and 3rd year. I think you have to do sociology and social policy for all 3 years to be eligible for a social work masters, but I'm not 100% on that.

I don't do social policy, but I'm in my final year of a sociology degree and I love it. It's mainly the study of groups of people/society and the interactions that occur between them. The modules in first year are mainly an introduction to the main themes of sociology, but in second and third year the modules are more diverse - there's ones on the sociology of media, gender, sexuality, revolutions, music... If you've any more questions about it, send me a PM :)

What level of programming(etc.) knowledge are you supposed to have when going into this course?

I'm very interested in computers but have never used anything programming-related in my life.

Would it be beneficial to learn something before I go for this course?

Can anyone suggest, maybe a (free) online course or something, that would give me a basic knowledge of programming and such?

    Thank you :D

Anyone doing a postgrad and know what kind of stuff one should put down in a personal statement?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

I haven't actually started my personal statement yet, but I assume it's just a case of writing why you want to do the course, how you found out about it, and what you hope to gain from it? That's what I plan on writing for mine anyway... Make sure and make yourself sound amazing :D

    None.

If you want to do really well, then go ahead. But you risk getting bored early on since you'll already know everything.

Why you want to do course, why you selected the course, what qualifies you to be an applicant, what you hope to achieve from the course, what you hope to achieve in career/life, relevant work/life experience that qualifies you for the course, etc,.

Can anyone here tell me about any physics or maths courses?
I'm specifically looking at Theoretical Physics & Maths but the points are astronomical, so in case I don't get in, I'm also thinking about Physics & Astrophysics or a General Science. Can anyone tell me anything about any of these? Thanks!

p.s. I've just spent forever going back through the pages but apologies if someone already talked about them and I missed it - just point me to the post. (:

I see that you are planning on going to Maynooth and studying arts, I think I want to do the exact same subjects as you, Economics & Geography, and also that you're wanting to teach afterwards! I'm wondering if you know anything about Business as part of the Arts degree and will it be approved by the Teaching Council?

I don't actually do Physics or Maths, but I just thought I'd point you to a few things that might be useful :)

    BSc Science course outline
Physics and Astrophysics course outline - this one is the list of actual modules you'd be doing though.

I hope that's of some help anyway. I feel bad if I see people's questions unanswered!

Stick Maths and Theoretical Physics down first anyway. It's always a tiny class and they're usually a very close knit bunch, helping each other out with assignments, socialising together, etc. I can put you in touch with some people from that course if you want to talk to someone who's done it or is doing it :)
