Hi there, I wonder if anybody can advised me on the following:
How many hours per week is first year commerce?
Are all modules mandatory or is there an element of choice in 1st year?
Are all lectures in large grouyps as it's such a big year or are parts broken into smaller groups?
I may need to get a laptop for Commerce, is this correct? If so does anyone know if UCD have any deals with Dell or something like that in terms of getting one on finance?
Lastly does anyone know how many other 'mature'student's places are allocated on this degree programme?
Thanks for your help in advance.

Hi funnily enough I was going to open a thread with pretty much the same questions about the schedule of Commerce in UCD. If you check the undergraduate prospectus you'll see that they have a program called UCD Horizons that allows you to choose a module each semester from the whole of the courses in UCD, provided that it fits into your schedule and that you fill in the requirements for the course. Of the 60 credits you earn each year, 50 are courses you'll undertake through your Commerce degree and the remainder is of your choice.

Have you been offered the place already? I have but I hope I'm gonna get something else in due course although it seems like a good degree. Can't wait to get started....

Hey, thanks for your help. That Horizons idea sounds quite interesting, something to vary the 'business' focus. I was offered Journalism in DIT directly, and also Commerce from UCD-both by letter, they arrived before the last day for change of mind on CAO, after much deliberation, I felt the Commerce degree would be far more practical, and help me to develop important skills. I can always persue Journalism later in life. So I switched my choices around so that Commerce was 1st choice. What are you hoping for choice wise, have you not accepted Commerce then?

I have definitely accepted Commerce in UCD but I am still waiting for Trinity to review my application (they won't let me know until Round One in mid August whether they accepted my application or not) and have also applied for Economics&Finance in UCD which is higher in points and therefore they couldn't offer it to me on the first round at the beginning of July. I think the procedure is a bit different for me, I am not a mature student so I go through the same procedure as all applicants but at the same time as I already know how I did in my Leaving Certs (which I sat in Italy last year) and they had all the documents to review my application I think they worked out I would be entitled to a place in Commerce no matter what and that's why I received an offer I believe. As per Economics&Finance, they said I would have definitely received an offer based on last year's closing points but not on the points of Round One, so hoping I get it maybe later on. Trinity seems to be a big mess, it is so frustrating not to know that I kinda gave up on it.

If you want to see the subjects you'll take and the time commitments, it's all detailed here

You won't have any choice the first two years, in third year you will choose a specialised stream

Thanks a mil for providing that link it's extremely useful. I saw all the different offerings for the courses in terms of different days of the week that you can take them but how does it work exactly? You basically choose the time that suits you to take part to your lectures?

Also, I don't know if you are a student or not but I was wondering do you believe it's feasible to work part time while studying? I have to hand in my notice at the end of the month and I want to collect as much information as possible.

No. You are allocated to a class and that determines the times of your lectures.
