When was the last time you heard a motorist say I'm going to damage the next bicycle I see chained up in the wrong place?

We don't normally see bicycles locked up in the middle of the driving lane.

Yeah, methinks if it was an actual cop they would just leave a parking fine, not a note about a parking fine. Unless of course the dog ate their finebook.

They are valid, I've seen the Gardai putting em on cars in my old place in Dundrum

+1 Exactly what I was going to say.

Like the OP, I've often had similar thoughts. And like the OP, I've never followed through. So I feel your pain OP!

That would be funny, well until a lorry comes and roles over it. :D

OP you should visit a professional, your criminal anti-social tendencies indicate that you may need anger management therapy.
Is there such a thing as cop on therapy?

I have seen bikes, which has fallen over, chained to road signs and had a wheel out on the road. I've stood a few of them back up in my time too. I'm not all bad. ;)

I would have thought it all goes through computer and htey get a fine in the post, exactly so they cannot say they lost it. But the note, if they do get it, is just telling them to expect it in the post and let them know when and where they committed the offence.

I have seen manys the bike stomped to bits & destroyed that was locked up in the RIGHT place. I presume since so many people drive cars than some of the vandals are "motorists", many are probably "cyclists" too.

A friend got one of those Garda notes left on his car and sure enough a fine notice arrived through the post a short while later.

I don't see how just posting them a fine is really helping. Sure they might think twice about it, but they more than likely are just taking a chance and are blissfully unaware how dumb their parking is.

However, a "cost price" of lifting the car from the lane would be a great way to ward of the other people who might do similar. The usual routine would be clamping, then eventually lifting illegally parked cars, what good is that to the herd of bikers who will probobably have to deal with the situation.

But if they straight off lifted the cars out of the lane, then it would give them a strong message. Most importantly anyone driving past too, while on the ground the actual problem can be solved.

More often than not following cars actually don't give out about it, if someone does just ignore them give them a friendly wave, or indeed point to the car parked in the cycle lane... Staying entirely out of a cycle lane with parked cars in it is the correct and safe thing to do (leaving as you say a door length to avoid being doored.)
The law requires you to indicate while going around vehicles parked in a cycle track. So, this means that the width of the car, the length of the car door, the width of the cyclist and the length of the cyclist's arm are taken up on the road.

We need to get the message across that on-street parking of cars effectively uses up two traffic lanes & is a waste of space.

The law prohibits on-street parking that interferes with the normal flow of traffic. I think a more aggressive interpretation of this rule would result in the elimination of cars parked in cycle tracks (even where permitted by the anti-cycling regulations) due to the knock-on effect on other traffic.

I'm aware of the law, what I am suggesting is common sense. Pointing out the problems and absurdities with the law I agree is a useful exercise but actually following it to the letter in this country would be very foolish not to mention dangerous.
