Light/Star over Athlone

    Hey guys.

Just wanted to see if anyone else saw this.

I was looking out for the Shuttle being launched at about 11:45pm last night but was told it was delayed due to bad weather. The missus was upstairs looking out the front bedroom window (west) while I was down in the kitchen looking out the back (East).

I didnt tell her that is had been delayed because I didnt want to wake our son by opening the stair gate at the top of the stairs.

She came out of the bedroom to the landing about 12:30am and called me and said to go out the back and look up. So I went out the back and looked up and there was a very bright white light going across the sky quite fast from west to east. Of course I thought it must be the shuttle had been launched.

How here is the thing. The light stopped, just stopped south of Athlone and was hovering in the one place. The light was very bright, it was not a plane of helecopter becuase there were no red or green flashing lights, just one very bright white light. Then I thought it could be something like the Astra satalite re-positioning or something, but if it was not. If it was then I should not have been able to get a signal on my sky box if the satalite was over to the west becuase my dish would have been blind to it.

So, its not a satalite, its not a plane, its not a helecopter and its not a shuttle.... then what is it.

Its now 2:45am and the light is still there popping in and out from behind the clouds if anyone is still up to pop their head outside to see.

Its not that a bright light is sitting what looks to be over Athlone, its more the fact that it flew in from somewhere else over 2 hours ago and is still just sitting there. I recon it probably was going at least 1000 miles per hour from what I saw. There was no noise from it and it just went from going way faster than a plane to a total standstill.

I saw this light about 2 weeks ago and said it to the missus that I never saw a star so bright in the sky before. I thought that maybe it was a planet or space station or something. But now I have seen it again in almost the same spot, and that it flew in from a different place I am quite confused.

Does anyone know what it is. Did a few searches on google and nothing came up.

    Eoin

Haha, I was wondering how long it would take for someone to say Santa! lol

Just reading over my post.. jesus I sound like one of those crazy UFO watchers! lol But i can say it was there, both myself and the missus say it fly over and stop and watched it for a few hours as it hovered around the sky. I dont think it was directly over athlone, more like a bit to the south of athlone.

Was just strange to see something like it and was wondering if anyone saw it too.

The International Space Station would have been going over around that time. Very bright and very fast, but it wouldn't have stopped overhead!

That was one of my thoughts.

I took photos of it but they are not very good. I will pop them up anyway to show and see what anyone makes of them.

Sorry if the images are a bit crap but it will show how far it has moved in ten or so minutes.. stars dont move that quick in the sky.

Here goes. I am 100% certain I saw a UFO about 10 years ago near Newellsbridge which is the bad bridge on the old Kilbeggan to Mullingar road. Its the bridge b4 the vilage of Dalystown. One morning at about 08.30 my mother and I saw it and we pulled in, got out of the car and looked at it for about 20 mins. I can still picture it in my mind.

hmmmmm, that light is back again. Its a bit brighter tonight. If anyone is still up in athlone take a look up and see it for yourself.

It wasnt there last night that I could see.

It seems to show between 11:30 and 12 midnight. Not the exact same time each time it shows. It moves pretty quick across the sky, quicker than the stars or moon so Im guessing its not a star, nor do I think it is a planet as that would move across the sky pretty much the same speed as the stars as the earch spins.

Im getting very curious to find out what it is now.

    Any ideas!?

My mate saw this the other night - I thought he was talking about the launch from Cape Canaveral (sp?), but turns out it's appeared a couple of times. Very bright, above the clouds, definitely not a star.

I'll quiz him a bit more about it this eve. Fair play with the pics, but tbh you can't tell anything at all from them :D

the second picutre kinda looks like a reindeer :S lol, i actually saw something similar a few nights ago! now im based in the coosan (rindoon park) area, and i saw a relatively bright light in the direction of the bypass, if ya follow it toward galway. it was moving for a couple of seconds and then stationary. i was a bit freaked at the time, but have completely forgotten about it until now!! if you see it again, make sure to post!!

I tried my best with the images but camera is not the best. There was not a cloud in the sky last night and the light was really bright but battery was dead in the camera.

Sounds like the one alright. Its WAY to bright to be a star. I was thinking it was a planet but I scrapped that idea pretty quick.

The first time I saw it I just thought it was a very bright star. The I didnt notice it for 2 weeks until the night the shuttle launch was supposed to take place. The missus saw a bright light moving quite quickly in the sky. I saw it as it passed the house and then it just stopped. And thats the light that you saw.

Its there nearly every night, but not all nights. Was one night the other night it was not there, which would be strange if it were a star because they show up every night regardless.

Anyway, it will more than likely be there again tonight.

I will try and get better pics if I can.
